i thought a r reg is classed as a 77 which has a different rear panel unless it was on the change over ie last few shells out of the plant. which did have a swallow tail rear panel but the new floor panel

Bert , thanks for the info; that is the only pic that I have seen with one on.. seems an unusual feature on the car thus I think I'll be keeping it!

That is an amazing car you have, maybe someday mine will look that good!

alright the boot stay bar is a strange 1 as some cars had them some never . i ve saw 74 to 77 with them , but i ve got 3 s1 and none of them has got them . i also know a few swallowtail owners without them .  i would sayit was never a swallowtail option just a basic spec option.
The rear wiper would be a optional extra as early tailgates  are solid , there is  no holes in it.
i get some pictures of mine to show you.

awesome insight astraman18  :) very strange indeed, I think mine is basic spec, thus could be a cheaper option that what appeared on the higher spec L & LS models.. sometimes basic is cool..

That is an excellent find! How much did you pay for it if you dont mind me asking? Please dont say, 'I paid exactly what it was worth'lol
What needs to be done is for someone to set some kind of website where it will list all the classic cars sitting in barns and garages. I dont know how it could be done but wouldnt it be great so we could all find cars like this?! there must be a way of finding cars that have been sitting in garages and barns for years. If somebody has such a car, would they have to sorn it from the time they have had it in storage or is this a relatively new thing? Perhaps these cars could be found by contacting DVLA? There has to be a way!!!!!  :o

If you look on any if the major websites, Edition38, retrorides ,SSVC etc there's threads on abandoned vehicles/left to rots and parked ups…

Most people don't care (non car fanatics etc)

Thanks for the info. I take it by sugar water you mean sugar soap like you use when decorating and cleaning old walls etc?

It's still amazing how much the colour has changed back - fantastic

Cheers Hairyarse … sugar soap was the stuff, not just sugar dissolved in water as it implies   edited post to make this correct for others.
