A few suggestions from me :)

Nissan Pulsar GTi-R
Mistsubishi Evo 5 or 6
Toyota Supra
Nissan 300zx
Mazda RX7
Vauxhall Astra VXR
Corrado G60

or double your budget and get a Clio V6 ;)

Nissan too old, Evo/Scooby like but possibly high running costs, regular maintenance etc, Supra too small in back, RX7 possibly, Asta VXR plastic dash, Corrado tempting but bit old, saw a Clio V6 that was Cat D repaired for 8k the other day, was very tempting

Oh yeah, forgot the 4 adults thing - I don't think that's doable, thinks it's really a 2-seater

I had a mk4 R32 and like Anna said they are not as expensive as most people think to run. Its the AWD that sells it to most drivers. The power is sexy but its the deliverance that gets any person wet.

If you thrash it a lot you will be returning between 15 and 25 mpg, however chilling and not entering the high rev range you'll return 30+mpg easy.

Its wise to get one with a FSH from a VAG specialist as VW had two recalls regarding the coilpacks and the flat spot during mid revs. The engines run forever if well maintained even those with 100k+ mileage.

R32 all the way. If you got a hench wallet you can go nuts tuning them.

Just to add….its not the end of the world if the R32 hasn't had the recall work done. VW do it for free if you contact them. Thats what I did.

Thanks mate, I had read about the coilpack and also the rev flat spot but most I have looked at have had a map to sort the flat spot and I would prob do that as well.

I don't wana get too excited but I might had one lined up and in not a common R32 colour ;-)

I have been trying to join the R32oc for the past 6 weeks!!!! but the validation emails don't work ,and no admin is getting back to me on there or their FB page, its a joke, I cant even reply to guys with cars for sale !! :-(

I had a lexus IS200 b4 my BMW with a nice subtle factory kit fitted etc and did like them, S14A is a good shout but I am thinking of staying away from anything turbo or too brash and loud if you know what I mean otherwise would prob go the Evo/Scooby route

That is when you reach for the Toyota Aristo. Its basically the lexus GS300 but with the supra engine in it. Shop around and you'll find one in that budget range with a single turbo on it that is easy good for 500 horses!! There are also some impressive soarers and chasers about as well if you like your metal classic.

Its not a bad shout mate, but my backs not great so getting something that low everyday wouldn't be great, and I need something that I can use as a weekend commuter as well.

That's a lot of power and sounds interesting but maybe a little bit older and bigger than I am looking for

if you liked the IS 200, but want some more poke, how about an IS300?  3 litres, 211bhp - probably the best of the 40 or so cars I have had.

Still got some touch up paint and it's not far off - even closer is some Porsche Guards Red I kept, even though it's 20yrs old.

Drop the TT engine straight in an IS300 and have 300-400 bhp depending on what box you can crane in it or just go NA-T there's lots of kits for that now.

Yeah I liked the lexus, but didn't love it enough to get an IS300 I don't think. One I had not thought of though.

Think its 99% likely I will end up with an R32.

In conversations about one with a guy now, but he is other side of country and flat out with work, so just arranging times for car inspection by AA / RAC most likely and then if all good, when I can pick it up  :)
