I think you're going about it the right way Mike. It really sucks when something like this happens to our pride and joy. However, they are cars and sadly something like this happens to most in their lifetime.
As you're doing, getting it fixed and improving at the same time is a good idea and in the long run I'm sure that you'll be happy for it.
Shame about the salt in wounds but it does like rather nice in the VWH catalogue

Yes it does happen but what happens the next time when the person doesn't own up?
That's my biggest fear.
I can only have TPFT insurance here and then what?
I have other little marks as well from parking but I take those on the chin.
Love my Mk1 and a challenge, that's why we all do what we do but there has to be a limit and sadly for almost all of us, it's a financial one.
But I will play one line in the Lottery between now and spring next year!
You never know.

Well it sounds like there should be a happy ending to this tale. Don't fret about the next time, hopefully there wont be one!
Hopefully not Andy, if someone stumps up the right money!
Should add that I did one line of the Euro Lottery last night and had both the bonus numbers (1 and 10), I was just missing the others, that's all.

Parked the car to have a coffee as I was freezing and when I walked out I found this.
And from behind.
Waited for the older 'Trucking Tanker' to come back (about 5 or 6 minutes) and waited for him to at least look towards me but guess what?
Yep, he ignored me and got in his DPD van and F'd off!
Oh and he was parked in a 'No Parking' area because of the exit from the Garage.
This is the type of parking and mentality I have to deal with every single day and people are wondering why I will sell mine!
By the way, here's a clearer picture of the 3rd of 3 times when someone has whacked my white cabby with a red roof (as if you can't see it).
Off now to park it my 'Man Garage' for the winter.
Number plates go back to the insurance company so I don't have to pay.
But knowing my luck the darn Garage will fall down on it and yes it's that old!
Does anyone want to guess what the "W" stands for at the start of the number plate?
Oh it's not German for 'Wien' Vienna in English!

At this rate, I'll buy an Iraqi war army surplus I.E.D proof armoured vehicle and have done with it.
Surround the sides with big sod off truck tires and not bother taking it every weekend to jet wash it etc…

Well it's happened for a 4th time!
Now if anyone has followed this post you'll know the car was hit hard just two days before I put him away last winter in November.
(that was the 3rd time in under three years)
Just a reminder above but I only had the repairs done one month ago.
A week later I spent a small fortune on having a Pro clean of the seat, carpets and a three stage polish job.
The next week I had the engine and bay 'Dry Iced' cleaned before setting off to the 'Wortersee Treffer' for six glorious days.
So far so good!
I came back only 12 days ago.
Last Saturday I thought I'd help my Wife by going shopping for her, a rare event I have to say.
It was raining and for once I got a good parking space, close to the entrance of the supermarket, which looked safe.
Well it looked safe enough (I'm always looking for the risk) because of this car's history, went in and got everything she wanted plus some extras just for her!
Came out to the front of the car, put the shopping in the car and to her delight arrived home shortly after, no pit stop for a quick beer at my local!
Went to the car yesterday morning and found this!
Can only imagine that it was rammed fairly hard with one those large shopping trolleys?
There's no traces of paint from another vehicle, nothing.
Over here that's going to set me back 400 or 500 quid to have done properly.
I love my car but as I posted here after the 3rd time when I said, "enough is enough", well this is the 4th time in just over three years of ownership.
The first three I was able to claim on others insurance but as no one admitted to this, its down to me.
I know for a fact that the first three together have cost insurance companies a combined total of 5k GBP, remember Austria is expensive!
So what will I do?
Good question.
To be honest I just don't know yet.
I will have the repairs done and then I need to think about it, I do love my car and get so many compliments which is great lets be honest.
Who doesn't enjoy such praise?
But I'm not a charity, I've invested a great deal of money and time in my Mk1 and I'm nowhere near finished yet but even I no when "enough is enough".
I like a challenge but come on!

Sorry Mike.
My condolences.
I always dread parking here, because everyone uses there bumpers as a parking aid. Fortunately, most of the time I'm in a van, so it doesn't matter.
I'll have to video it one day, you just wouldn't believe it.
I had a really mint Merc, and someone did exactly the same thing.
I'm really not looking forward to putting the Golf on the road! I think I'll get some of those big bubble wrap amazon use now, and glue it on the sides.
Is there any way of fitting a discreet camera system in the door mirrors and on the front and back?
If someone did one, I think I'd get one.

Do it once and do it right! ok, we've identified the problem, lets not make it worse by guessing……… Identifying the sympton is not the same as understanding the cause

Well here's the thing.
I have a dash Cam in the front which I could use it in a continuous loop if I want.
It has a 32Gb card in it and on low res would give me about four hours of recording.
I do have another one which I can place in the rear window but that doesn't cover the sides, well I've got that kinda covered as well.
I have a Toad Thatcham Cat1 alarm system fitted which uses 'Microwave Sensors' in and around the car.
So if someone stands at the sides of the car within about one foot they get a nice load warning. If they stay there for one minute all hell breaks lose!
I've seen it happen.
I can leave the top down and arm the system, if you lean over the windows and put your arm inside again, all hell will break lose!
Oh and I've tried doing it, and it really works!
But none of that combats this type of damage.
The other option would be hang old tires off it like a Tug boat but that may have a tiny impact on performance and economy!

For people to abuse cars the way they do when it's someone's pride and joy is just unbelievable! I hope you will see past all of the aches and pain you have had since owning your Mk1 and keep hold of it for a little while longer because I wouldn't mind seeing Schrat in the flesh at the AGM

I swear if I was to be buried in mine some bügger would scratch it within a week of me being six feet under!
As for driving over to an AGM.
I think everybody knows I'd love to do it but the problem is I know my body just won't handle it.
My road trip to Wörthersee this year I did 1,250 Km's in six days and I felt it I can tell you.
The AGM would be triple that in 10 or 12 days, I think that would just about finish me off and then a day or two later back to work!
Was back at the paint shop yesterday with this new one and the 4th will set me back €300!
Providing they don't have to take the rear wheel arch body kit trim off!
Back there in two weeks.
