How do you tell the differnece from a 90 PS engine to a 112 PS engine ?

Post

Hello all

Ive got an engine which i dont know if its a 90 ps from a Cabrio or a 112 ps from a GTI

My block has these numbers:

2BE
026103021E
040292
Brazil

Cylinderhead has these

026103373AA 43

Im a bit worried that its a 90 PS, as i was promised a GTI engine, which would be the original engine for my 1983 GTI Pirelli.

Hope someone can help me.

I thought all should be same power rating, i,e, all 1.8 GTI's. The difference could be if you've got a 1.6 not a 1.8

One way to tell is the water pipe on a 1.6 connects to the cylinder head between cylinders 1 and 2 (from the left) and 1.8 between 3 and 4.

I hope that helps?

The best way would be to look at the engine code, its on a flat area under the dizzy.

Does it have a mechanical fuel pump, or the gap where one should be?

Its with the water hose on the right as the 1.8´s

But i have the new oil filter bracket

I cannot seem to find the engine code, besides those i already found.

What would a typical engine code look like ?

TBH I can't make that picture out, its not clear where it is. The letters/numbers don't look like the engine code/number either.

I just painted my block, so this pic shows you where the code is, in the top right hand side behind the dizzy as said b4  :)

All big block ones yes (don't know anything about small block engines).

OK If you give up on the engine number, what about the fuel pump?

I thought with the 1.8cc the 90bhp engine was the carb and the 112bhp was the fuel injected engine?
Not sure if ps is the same a bhp?

Does your block not have 1.8 stamped on the side. Both my DX (mk1) and EV (mk2) blocks have it stamped on them.
Im also with mark1gls, about the carbed and injected bhps.

First Golf, lots of work. I've started so I'll finish!

Nope, says nothing on the back or the front.

Only those numbers i wrote earlier.

Its either a cabrio or a MK2 gti engine from what i can tell of the numbers

Hope someone can help me on this one…

May seem like yet another daft question (Apologies) but the 6 digit number after the DX … is this the "Engine Number" ? Reason I ask is because I'm ordering up some parts from GSF and it always says up to engine number …… and from engine number …..  :(

Yes, DX is the engine code, engine number follows it ;)

Cheers Andy,

Findings parts on GSF is soooo confusing for a rookie' for example, there are about 5 dizzy caps each stating differing year ranges plus engine ranges  :(
