Cheers smudger.
When was the first series 2 produced? August 1980?
My golf was made on the 12th of July and left the factory on the 15th. It has the original rear panel and all the other various s1 bits.
If you ask me. That makes it a series 1

There's an overlap of a couple of months at least between the first S2 being made, and the last S1 being registered - that's how there's a couple of B reg mk1s when the mk2 was out.
In short, that S1 is probably real - a quick snap of the chassis number will prove that!

Yeah it is the light in that pic. The off side rear has has a knock in the past and i had it straightened out when it got its re spray. They didn't do the best job and now the sides are not symmetrical. It has bugged me for ages. It is now in the bookshop to get that rectified.
It has a 10 digit vin number and a series 1 vin plate. Not sure about the strut top and can't check either because it is away at the paint place.
I think my car was registered in October.

As somebody else put some old photos in here is my first golf, a 1977 3 door Golf 1.6 GLS. I used to tow a small Tabbert caravan with this.
I owned it for 4 and a half years from 78 to 83.
It was imported to the UK in 1980, hence the W plate.
