Clipper running issues
After having cutting out problems with my Golf I noticed crap n the fuel filter, so had the filter, tank and vapour trap replaced (previous owner did the filler neck). It ran fine again for about a month then the same problem again!
So I went ahead and replaced the filter again and new braided fuel lines.
It has now run fine again for about 2 and a half to 3 weeks. Last nite on the way home from work the car starts cutting out again, this time tho when you are trying to maintain a constant speed she dies, so take foot off pedal and she keeps going, try to ease the gas on and it dies. After a while i realised if I put my foot to the floor I could keep it going, with the choke out fully.
The only way to pull away from a junction was basically choke out fully and ride the clucth to get the car moving then foot to the floor again to keep going.
Any ideas anyone? Could it still be a fuel problem or is there anything else that could be the cause?
Sorry about the essay!
Thanks in advance!

I had this problem and removing the air box and a few good squirts of carb cleaner sorted it out, it was gummed up.
worth a try.

The carb on there is a webber now not a pierberg as from the factory and i changed it from auto choke to manual choke at the same time, as it played up with the pierberg at around 117 or 118K miles. That was the only major problem i really had with it. The carb was actually provided by funk-star who has replied to the thread above and was in real good order, so i cant imagine it being the carb, but i suppose with old cars you never know, and im not sure if me or funk new the exact mileage on the carb, think some times with bits like that you inspect with the eye, if you know what i mean.
Is the choke handle and all pipes and things still attached well to carb? I cant remember when i fitted it exactly but i did a few huindread miles if not more with new carb in place at least before you bought it, by your symptoms above i would guess that is probably something simple with the carb that needs tweaking, really hope it is. Didnt realise it could do with a tank and vapouir trap etc, but great to hear its having these new bits and new braided lines and stuff, i miss that car, and still not 100% i made the right decision selling.
have a look at the below of this post at my build thread for the clipper, as it prob says on thier the post date i added webber carb, and to keep your enthusiasm up here's a nice pic of it in the sun :-)
hope its something simple mate, and that your well

other cause might be a air leak. might be worth taking the carb off and check for splits in the rubber base plate. or spray brake cleaner around the inlet manifold and see if the rpm increases. if so se where and thats your leak. (be careful tho as it is flammable)

No worries mate. I just thought if there's a bit of crap in there
I might as well replace it all with new stuff just for peace of mind and
It's all good for the car and history. It's all to be expected with an older car tho.
I'm gonna give it a blast with carb cleaner this afternoon and see how I get on
with that. All the pipes appear connected too.
I will let you know how I get on later. Fingers crossed it'll all be good.
I think I will get the refurb kit too.
It is mint cruising around in the sun with the top down! I hope your backs on the men's too mate!
Thanks for the replies and advice guys!

I used the carb cleaner but it's still cutting out when you try to drive.
I did notice a wire that appears to come from underneath the carb that looks like it should be connected, there is an empty connector there too.
Should I connect it n try? I was going to but im not sure what it is?
Any ideas greatly received!
Thanks

I will try n post some pics tomorrow.
Yeah, it ran fine then started playing up recently.
I think I will get the refurb kit and get that done and get the garage to double check all the pipes.
Thanks for the reply mate.

1. removed the vapour trap ad link the fuel pump direct to the carb. Blank off the return fuel line. This makes it easier for the fuel pump to pump as it isn't having to send fuel back to the tank. Loads of people do this and causes no issues.
2. cleaned out rust from the fuel tank using a magnet on a stick from halfords. Take up the back seat, unscrew the black circular plate, remove the fuel lines, and then use a oil filter clamp to twist the plastic bit. Pull out the fuel pick up unit and pipe and clean the filter on the end. What often happens is crap in the tank gets pulled up against this filter and stops the fuel flowing. The engine stops and the suction goes so the crap falls away and the engine will restart. shine a torch in and look for crap in the tank, and remove with magnet. Remove the non metallic crap with a plastic symphn tube with a hand pump unit in it (silverline make one for about £10).
3. New fuel pump about £20 and 10 mins to fit
4. New fuel filler cap as the seal on the old one had gone and was letting water and all sorts in when it rained
The first thing I would do it make 100% sure there is no crud in your fuel tank and I would only trust seeing it yourself! If you are saying you had a new fuel tank then should be ok, but double check anyway in case the fuel filler neck has some issues. If the tank clean then maybe it's a dodgy fuel pump. I would take the vapour trap out and block the return line, and see if that works. If not then I'd get a new fuel pump. Fuel pumps can be weak or intermittent, so testing them is hard - if yours looks old then just replace it. If it is a cheap copy part thn replace even if looks new.
Hope it helps, car looks lovely btw!

Thanks for your reply.
New fuel pump here today so i will chuck it on this weekend and give it a try, if no different i will try bypassing the vapour trap and see if that helps in the short term.
I will keep you posted on the outcome!
Thanks again for everyones help.

Run pipe from the pump direct to carb, blank return pipe to tank. And remove separator completely
