Which engine for a fast track/road car

No real benefit. APY was 210 bhp vs the APX 225, neither have vvt (variable valve timing) like the later BAM code engine. The vvt was for emissions rather than performance anyway, both the apx and APY ran secondary air pumps for emissions, you won't as it's a mk1 golf.

AEB's have the larger intake Ports aswell. Normally Found on passats etc - Normally good engines that haven't been abused, especially if you can get one which was originally an automatic.

There are some small differences internally between 19mm and 20mm wristpins, but being perfectly honest, if your putting anymore than 240hp in a mk1 its pointless. Least for Front Wheel Drive.

Grab yourself a K03s turbo and a good exhaust system and your good for 200hp plus with a good remap. Don't buy an engine you don't know the history on..

Passat engine will need messing with tho as its mounted the wrong way.

I'd go AGU for ease if it was me.

The Mountings Needed to Fit it are no different from the AGU… you are essentially just fitting an engine that is longitudinal to transverse, however there are parts you would need to change on an AEB that you wouldn't need to on the AGU.

Sump, pick up pipe, intake manifold, and a few modications to allow the AEB exhaust manifold/turbo to fit.

I looked into fitting a R32 engine - at the time it seemed a larger challenge and more costly project. For similar bh figures i decided to stick with the 1.8T but id love to here or read a project on how they found that conversion.
