these are the early ones:
171 823 509 - lower catch
321 823 501 a - upper catch

both deleted at vw unfortunatly

If I need to use the original cable im going to get a bike brake cable clamp, should be able to pick them up from any bike shop

Will get those bits changed and let ya know how it goes!

Just to update this.. These are the parts you need from vw heritage to replace both upper and lower bonnet catches on a tintop gti..
You will need to mod the end of the bonnet cable, i used to bicycle brake cable pinch bolt, works a treat :)
