Realistically, £1000 isn't enough these days to buy a decent Mk1. You should be able to find one which needs work (maybe lots of it……small project) and/or is tatty at that price though.

They didn't do a 1.8 hatchback except the GTI. The range of engines in the hatchback is:

1.1
1.3
1.5
1.6
1.6 injection (GTI)
1.8 injection (GTI)

Of course you can insure it, but could you afford it? The only way to know is to pick up the phone and get some quotes, but searching around this site would suggest £1000-1500 for first year's insurance, on a lower engine size (1.1 or 1.3) is about the right ballpark figure.

You thought about getting a non runner and restoring it ready for when you pass yOur test. Some pretty decent projects out there for around the £500 mark. But as Paul said you'll struggle to get a decent tintop mot and taxed for £1000

Thanks guys, i may actualy have more than  a grand, ive looked at insurance quotes on a 1.3, and its around 800 cheaper than i expected, so my budget may actualy have a budget of around 1800 leaving me enough for my insurane. So im going to look for a 1.3 3 door tintop! But, i dont want to be made a full of, what sort of performance an you get from a 1.3, like acceleration, top speed and that? My mates getting a brand new 1.0 twingo, will i keep up?

Got this from another thread:

60 hp

 1.3 = 0-60 in 15.0 sec, top speed 92 mph

Are there any mods which can improve that figures?

if you want performance, don't get a 1.3 and modify it. get a more powerful car. the 1.5 should be enough for a bit of poke/fun. I hate to say it, but you'll probably end up upside-down in a field of brussel sprouts if you drove a GTI.

i mean no harm by this but i do get a giggle from young people wanting performace and cant help but think the motor bike restriction should apply to cars in the same sort of way aswell, as paul tryed saying a 1.8gti is to powerfull for young kids and point stands even more so when they talk about power and top end,

with out it sounding insulting  a 1.1 or similar for a 1st car is all you should have, until you no longer need to ask about performance, becuase it might not be a field off sprouts could be a whole lot worse

if you want somethig to keep up with modern cars i wouldnt buy a 30 year old golf. why not get a mk3 1.4 ?

i was the same when i passed my test a few years ago just wanted to red line everything, my megane ended up in the back of an escort van and my saxo caught fire :(

I don't know why arf333 has suggested a Mk1 Golf is slower than a 1.4 Mk3 Golf. If you consider power to weight ratio, then a 1.3 with 60bhp and about 800kg has got to be better than the Mk3! And better than many cars such as Corsa 1.0, Saxo 1.1, Peugeot 106 or 206 1.1, Fiesta 1.1 etc

So a 1.3 can easy do motorway speed? And nippy'ish around town. Im obviously not expecting it to be an impreza beater, i just dont want to end up being left behind by my mates 1.1's!

I'd say yes it will be absolutely fine!

have a look in the wheels and tyres for sale section mate, there was some on here listed not long ago.

I am with the majority above, a mk1 golf with a 1.3 in it will be more than quick enough , and would be quicker than any typical first car, saxo, fiesta, corsa etc etc

When i first joined the club one of the guys on here had a 1.1 mk1 tin top and sat behind me at 80 on the motorway no probs and i was in the 1.8 cabby , plus he kept up with me all around town

good luck wiv ya search mate
