MFA battery etc, blank MFA Clock

thats plug M, pin 1 runs to the fog light switch pin 83, this is the power output from the light switch (fogs only work with lights on)
the fuse holder above the fusebox with the grey/white wires is the rear fog light fuse in case you didnt know, so switch lights + fogs on and see if you get 12v to the back of the fuse

I am thinking fuse box is gone.
I need to drop it down and have a proper look.
I reckon having a 30 A in has damaged the box if thats possible.

Will have another look tomorow.

cheers again.

could be water damage also, my fusebox kept dropping fuel pump power and it was fuel pump relay socket corroded all to hell, plus fuel pump fuse had melted in the socket! pre-90 mk2 golf fusebox is the same but obv check for water damage before you buy

Any idea if available new?

If  I short the pins in the brake fluid level sensor cap, that should rule out hand brake switch problem?

Is that about right?

Just trying to rule a couple of things out.

Cheers

Okay,

Checked pin 2 Earth and it checks out Okay

Checked pin 4 IGN ON and I get just over 12V

So they seem okay.

I have checked the wire from the stalk assembley that connects to the Black horn push, followed the BRN/BL to plug L and it checks okay.

Hmmm most perplexing.

Fog light not working either.
will check the fuse and bulb tomorow but think that has been disconnected, will trace it back from the switch.

right now check pin 1 goes to earth when you press the horn button. if it does, the relay is broken. does the light come on in the fog light switch when you press it 2 clicks?

fusebox is 171 941 821 D, available from VW classic parts for €165.01

Cannot test the relay at pin 1 as it won't energise.
No clicking, the relay No6 is brand new as it was missing originally.

Fog light switch does illuminate, with lights on. It's illuminated 2 clicks on.

So there is power to the switch.

Its wierd though as yesterday I had no earth to the bay from the column. So I am gonna make a new wire up from the bulk head to the rack in case it's intermittent. It checked out okay before.
At least I know I have supply and earth at the fuse box, jut something missing in between.

put a wire or spade in pin 1, run your multimeter from there to ground. press the horn button and you should get continuity :)

if the light comes on then power should be coming out the switch, just a case of follow the grey/white to the fuse holder, then from there to the light.

Horn sorted.

I had Ross come over to cast an eye and see if he could shed some light on it.

What had happened was when I went into the motor factors I picked up the wrong relay from the right place in the rack.

So it's pin out was different, teach me to look properly.   :banghead:

Luckily Ross had another spare so once that was in all was well.

Fog light dirty contacts in the bulb holder sorted.

Warning light handbrake switch switch needs replacing.

The seats heating plugs were disconnected.

Once the seats were upturned all the realay and wiring harness bits were missing.

Gutted as these willl be a pig to find unless I get hold of the bloke in Canada the other forum users have used.

We noted that the plugs from the loom to the seats plugs were identical male and female connectors.

We checked for supply and all was good even varying it with the heated seat controlls on the dash.

I explained to Ross the missing bits the other guy's have on their heated seats, so a quick check around revealed that VW had moved the both relays position to my fuse box,     Which was relay No 57. Plugging the connectors together and turning up the control dial resulted in the drivers seat at least warming up. I had taken the Passenger one out so I could get better acsess to the fusebox.

So will return that to the car tomorow and hope it works too.

Ross took the clocks out and tested the RED wire to MFA and it has supply, so the module is probably busted, or a faulty earth.
So a bit more checking, but have a spare set of clocks coming to go in.

So still a few more bit's to sort out though.

Cheers

Thanks Johnny,

I need glasses.
My mates MK3 has them under his seat.

Good old VW keeping us on our toes.

just need to find a set of twin horns with the later plug on them.

Went to the scrappies today and got a handbrake switch out of a MK2, so that's another job done.
Ordered some Bembro Hubs.
Need some top mounts, seen some Febi on E Bay. Just put a post up as from memory someone had an issue.
Looking round for a sonnerland material hood, bit more durable than standard Mohair.

Next one for you power hood don't work LOL.

cheers again.

not too clued up on the power hood, buti know rtheres a load of fuses n relays in zee boot so worth a looky there. you need a key in ign live feed which comes off the ign switch so worth a looky at that too :)

obviously check the fluid level, and if you can hear the pump run but no movement its probably the impeller on the pump that has split, a common problem and im sure i read on here somewhere there was a repair kit? if not i saw a thread where someone repaired their impeller with 2 part epoxy gluie plus a sheet of metal stuck in it (the pump has a flat keyed side which wears, so you stick in a flat bit of metal to repair the key, if that makes sence)

I get relay clicking in the rear boot when pressing the up/down switch so thats all good.
Just need to see if there is a feed to the Pump motor.

I can get a repair kit for the pump also.

I think I have a leaky ram on the driver side as it's soggy.

But nothing suprises  me about this car.
Jelly did the engine flush and oil filter and change and got me an airfilter.

I went to fit that and there was not one in the car, it was missing. Lol.
So it's a case of having a look see.
The resevoir looks empty too. I know these can crack around the mounting points and leak too.

it's all good fun and I am getting on with bits and pieces.

thanks for your assistence so far.

Cheers

Further resaerch shows this also

Heated seat relays: under each seat.

*If not in this location it is mounted to the driver's side fender

**If not in this location, there are two interlock relays mounted to the back side of the kneebar.

Old thread i know lol, but did you sort out your MFA problem, as I,m having a similar issue?

Post

The reason for my dead MFA screen was the PCB was defunct so had to take one out of an old set of clocks.

A good trick is to take the clocks out and clean the copper contacts on the blue mylar film. Then put a couple of turns of insulating tape around the mounting nib the foil fits over, this pads it out so when the connector is re fitted it makes for a a better contact. So if you've done the head wire check and the earth braid to the coil mounting bracket too. I took my clocks apart to see part of the circuit board fried….
