Wide-arched 1983 Golf Gti-G60 & Digifiz!

Thought I would start a thread to keep track of progress and also post up answers to problems I find along the way..

This is how the car looked the day I bought it home:

The original spec:
G60 engine with a new G-works Charger last year along with cam belt and clutch replacement (estimated 220bhp)
Smaller charger pulley
Custom air filter
Custom charge cooler with front mounted rad and motorcycle fan to aid cooling
Boost recirculation system removed and now vented
Adjustable fuel pressure regulator
Full custom Powerspeed exhaust system
Corrado G60 280mm front brakes
G60 gearbox
Front and rear upper strut braces
Corrado front and rear re-trimmed in leather and suede with the fronts being electrically adjustable
Corrado dash
Smoothed boot with wiper removed
3" steel wide arches
Single wiper at the front
Smoked rear clusters
Clear front side repeaters
All rust sorted and a respray in a Nissan metallic blue
'Wolfsburg' alloy wheels, although im dubious as to whether they are or have just had Wolfsburg center caps put on?

Pictures of interior as it was:

First lot of work in no particular order:
Completely removed interior including dash, carpet, door cards etc.
Removed Momo Corse steering wheel and chrome 'Wolfsburg' gearknob
Removed 6x9's and amp installed in the spare wheel well and head unit
Removed electric windows and electric mirrors

Picture before I removed steering wheel and door cards etc:

I then sourced the following parts:
Chrome external and internal door handles
Chrome flag mirrors
New front and rear door cards from Newton Commercial
New Navy blue carpet with boot mat and matching floor mats
Complete mk1 dashboard with undertrays, centre console
Digifiz digital dash
Chrome dash surrounds
Rear seatbelts
Grey strip interior - I had them cleaned and the backs/headrests retrimmed so are now as new
Rear parcel shelf and supports
Old school chrome window winders
Wolfsburg Steering wheel
Original golf ball gear knob
Stainless steel dash inserts
Polished sill GTi trims

I am currently working on the wiring for the car, this involved trimming out loads of the Corrado loom that was un-needed or was excessively long and needed shortening whilst I also fitted the top half of the dash.

I then added the CE2 plugs to the parts of the loom that came with my Digifiz and cut the original mounting brackets to accomodate the clocks into the mk1 dash which can be seen fitted in the picture below:

At the moment I am still trying to sort out the wiring which involves hopefully chopping a mk1 loom plugs and the corrado plugs to allow the use of the mk1 stalks for the indicators, mfa and wipers. I also have to work out how the central locking is wired to the alarm system and wire up the dash switches which shouldnt be too hard. Once this is done the carpet, seats, rear seatbelts, rest of the dash and parcel shelf can go in which will almost finish the interior. I will be getting some gauges for the centre console and also try and get hold of a period radio to go in.

Future plans for the car are smoothed in indicators and roof aerial, chrome bumpers front and rear, chrome side strips and sill strips, coilovers, banded G60 steel wheels, chrome windscreen wiper and washer jet, original gti front grill, oil cooler, 16v or 20v conversion or 1.9 conversion, better gearbox and LSD, possibly syncro 4x4 conversion and also fix any problems that arise along the way. I will try and keep this thread as up to date as possible while the car progresses and my money decreases!   But at the moment I am focussed on getting it put back together and back on the road.

Thanks, I saw one and just had to have one! Luckily I managed to get a 'fully working' example on german ebay with the half loom, speedo sender and hours/minutes adjuster bit which to get it all is super rare apparently! Anyway will post more pics once its up and running

Well the digidash is far cooler , i used to have a corrado so anything like that sparks off nostalgia for me !

Im sure those wheels would have a very low offset but if there is enough meat on the back of the hubs i could turn them down so they sit in further  . . . may be interested in them once you have your G60`s ??

G-DUB, as promised here is some more wheel porn for you. I remember when my mechanic took an alloy off on the front to do a cv boot he said they had a meaty back sort of like a built in spacer so you could probably machine them down.

Im picking up a new g60 steel tomorrow so that I can see how they would look on the car and see how big the bands will need to be to fill the arches.. (when the alloy is off I will take a picture or two of the back for you)
Once they are banded im going to get the powder coated.. Im thinking either all chrome, dull gold centre and chrome lip or all gold.. will painshop pro some images up and see what looks good.

Cool Cool Cool , if your going the powder route there is the classic shadow chrome route or PPG now have a full chrome powder now too , you could even go the oem route with plastic centers and silver wheels . Anyhow your not too far away so keep intouch im paint shop and good friend is wheel refurb and powder coaters  8)

Thanks for the comments, think im gonna stick with the wide steel arches to keep a semi oem look rather than go the whole berg cup route.
G-Dub, picked up a set of steels (thanks dan) so now have 5 including the one I picked up the other day which will replace the dented one in the set unless i get it sorted as a spare. Anyway after playing around with some colours, once they are banded I think I may have to go with a bronze or dark gold powder coat with the black centres. Other wise I think it may be a bit too much chrome.

Creamfields this weekend so wont be making any progress but she started first time Sunday when I wired in the mk1 ignition :D! So on the wiring front just have to work out the central locking, wire in the buttons for hazards, headlight, rear heater, charge cooler and boot popper and then its done on the inside until I get some gauges for the center console.

Heres some pictures of my mint seats that will be going in

Also…. Heres a picture of how my last 'project' ended (cente fold of FastBike Magazine)

Update..

Right ive cracked on with the wiring and after sorting a leak that was coming from the boot lid mounts I have fitted the rear carpet, refitted the battery mount and also put in the parcel shelf supports, rear bench and parcelshelf

I am now stuck with the final bits of wiring which after head scratching, Google searches and just plain suck it and see wiring I can't seem to work out.
Firstly I had the indicators working via the stalk but they are now not working.. no idea why but I thinking there may be a loose connection.
The hazard light button on the other hand is just not making sense, after splicing in all of the other wiring  I was left with the blue/black and yellow/white wires from the CE2 loom which are meant to be the hazard light on top of the corrado stalks but after splicing them onto the relevant wires on the mk1 loom (blue/black & White) it dosent work.. I hope I dont have to wire each of the indicator wires to the switch but maybe someone can enlighten me..
Secondly the digifiz just dosent light up atall when I plug it in… not sure why as all the wires are soldered correctly, think this is going to be a pain in the ass but again I will be seeking some help.

Lastly is the central locking.. I wish I had taken some pictures when I unplugged this as it now makes no sense. The solenoids in the doors have two wires coming from them, then there are four wires coming from the alarm system which are for the lock/unlock two of which are plugged directly into two mini relays however there are wires spliced off of these which have connectors on to plug on somewhere and the two cables from the alarm not connected to the relays also have connectors. There are then 4 wires coming from the relays, two orange one red and one brown.
The door solenoids are currently not connected to anything so are loose wires and there is also a black and red wire earthed to the bonnet release connected to nothing and a fused orange cable that goes into the engine bay and into a black wrapped cable as far as I can chase it and the other end is connected to nothing. Pictures below

Two unconnected cables for lock/unlock from alarm

The relays

Internal loom wiring that is in the footwell

Fused orange cable

Close up of relay

I also have to rewire the boot popper, when I sold the electric corrado seats the guy took the loom for them and as I remember the boot popper was wired into the wiring under the seat.. Was this part of the relay system or was it just taking a 12v feed from them? I am unsure as when using a switch and 12v feed to the spliced wires it dosent seem to work.

If no-one can help my friend knows a good auto electrician who I will be asking to pay a visit to sort these last few bits out, but other than that it will all be worth it when the interior is finished and I can at least drive it again!

Forgot to mention there were loads of dud wires that i removed that I think were from a previously installed alarm. Just thinking that fused orange wire might be from that?

good luck with the project, it cant fail to be impressive when its done
what are the specs 8x15 ? and the offset of them wheels, if you want to sell them let me know :) im in need of a spare set

Thanks pirelli, I will be selling them eventually once i have some funds to band, powder coat and wrap the steels.

To update the project I have finally worked out the central locking! The majority of the wires were mainly there for no reason atall so I cut them all out. I fitted one of the new plastic door card covers and was planning on doing the carpets and seats but ran out of silicone so will have to wait. Ive also cleared up the wiring to the fusebox but still have to work out the indicators/hazard switch and why the digifiz wont light up atall.
Ive got a set of digital gauges foe the centre console to wire up aswell.. Boost/Oil Pressure/Oil Temp
