1.6 turbo daasssssel,low and wide,smooth engine bay,chrome

HI,
Andrew from ireland here,
been slowly collecting parts over the past year or so, as i always planned a mk1 golf project, just never got around to it with other things-college and the derby. but have a bit of free time this summer, so got cracking at this.

have a 5door shell that i will be restoring, doing all the welding and respray myself like my mk1 derby build.

plans are so far-

a full respray in a chocolate brown
going low and wide- coilovers and banded baby G60's
1.6td engine with front mount inter-cooler and tuned accordingly
fully smoothed engine bay-painted silver. battery, washer bottle removed to boot, top fill rad and all extra holes welded up.complete wire tuck aswel and cleaned engine and gearbox

There's are just the guide lines, will be adding to the list as i pick up parts

il let the pictures do the talking for the moment.

had this shell in storage the past few years- about time i got it out and stripped it down for parts

got it parked in the garage and got cracking straight away- and forgot to get more pictures

so the first thing i looked at-was the engine bay, il be staying and working here for a good while to get it the way i want it,
always wanted a smooth engine bay- and rare in a mk1 golf- so i jumped straight in

bye bye rain tray

started welding up any holes they went needed,

also running the loom under the wing, keeping the engine bay nice and tidy,

made a template so i could smooth the chassis leg

grille in perfect condition with perfect chrome strips and rare diesel badge

late fabric stitched gti arm rests
and
rear boot plates…shineyyy  :D :D

clean set of arches- were hard to find

and finally 5 door chrome door stripes

it'l be a slow moving project, but im taking my time for a reason so its done right.

picked up this today :D
very happy with it

was sold it as a 1.6 turbo diesel-with a top mount intercooler bolted on.

took a better look and noticed a few nice things, its got an "SB" engine stamp, and then saw a few extra sensors and that its actually a lovely GTD Engine :D happy days with a water cooled turbo :P

got the car back, played with it,got it running drove it for a little to check for any oil leaks. once happy with it i already started tagging off the loom and getting ready to take the engine out.

going to take the engine out on monday evening- and start stripping it down and prep it for some paint

been busy, but mainly on rebuilding my mk1 derby engine, but had some time to do a small bit on this engine also.altho nothing too picture worthy.

have the engine split and on the floor. decided to clean up the box as it was very dirty

after a powerwash, some diesel, degreaser, another powerwash, wire brush, and 1 more wash- dried and a lick of paint it looks like this :P

had it split and clean in a day, just kept at it-couple of hours and its done.looks 100times better. the block and head is the next job, going to detail the engine with everything freshened up.

updates will be slow for the next month or so. im heading away backpacking in Thailand, so il get back to it with more pictures and more build work then.

For some strange reason I like this project :) it seems very familiar….

One thought.

that ugly bracket can be a whole lot nicer if you move the captive nut to the front of the bracket, then plate over it to enclose it to make a solid lump rather than some bent metal.
