Mk1 GTI Cabby. The Project So Far... NOW SOLD :( !

Thanks guys.

Got the bases from VW. Had to get them in from Germany but arrived in a few days.

£160 for the pair but I only want to do the re-trim once!

With regards to the soundproofing, I'm not sure if it works as I haven't got my system wired up yet. It should stop the panels from rattling around with the bass and improve acoustics.

Looking forward to attending some meets next year and meeting everyone. (and the Mrs said she'd come too…not sure if that's a good thing? LOL) Hopefully it'll be finished by then????

Thanks Tian/Brad,

If I remember correctly I got the inspiration for the boot build you did Tian.

Double-garage is great…don't know how I would've done it in a single!

6 x 9s are going in the rear 1/4's although I'm toying with components as I can direct the tweeters better….not sure?? Views??

see a lot of vinyl in your gaff too, what you play?

I play and produce with a guy called Ian Carey. you can hear some of my shit on youtube
http://www.youtube.com…h_query=brad+holland&aq=f

so i take it if your putting them in the rear quarters then thats the door card goosed? I was toying with the idea of getting another back part of the rear seat and modifying it so that it has speakers recessed into it but still useable as a seat. im probably just dreaming.

Wow Brad. You've got eagle eyes. I didn't even realise my tunes were on show in the pics!

Yep, in to my tunes and mix. Pumping funky vocal house all the way! Used to play out quite alot.

Just looked at your link with the mrs…..amazing tunes mate. Heard it all before….what a classic tune!

You play out in clubs or produce only?

haha love a bit 'o funky house me mate!!
Play and produce, still scrambling my way up, although I'm blessed with producing as my day job.
Did a gig in Doha, Qatar last month, it was amazing 3k+ people on a beach.
the heat out there is something else it was like 45/50 but you went outside and didnt sweat although it felt like an oven, then you came indoor bask in to aircon and within 15 seconds you were soaking wet. really weird!! haaha

so have you fitted 6x9's in you car? i bought some the other day, but cant find anywhere i can fit them in the car door cards on the back seat are not big enough to accomodate it seems.

Haven't fitted mine yet but the rear door cards should be fine.

Just have to make sure there is enough clearance for the speaker grilles to fit on without the window winder fouling them.

I think the original rear cabby speakers were a tad smaller than 6 x 9 but not enough to stop 6x 9's going in.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

hhhm, well mines in the garden now, with back seat out and rear door card off, i cant see anywhere this speaker is going in. the cradle of the speaker wont even go into the panel far enough so that the speaker would sit flush against the door card.
i wonder if spacers are available?

Hi Brad,

Just taken a couple of pics.

There is plenty of space behind my rear 1/4 panels for speakers:

Ive re-made my rear 1/4 door cards as I'm going to move the position of the speakers probably and maybe put components in instead.

Thay had 6 x 9's in before as you can see from the old card.

For some reason the above picture ahs gone all pi***d but you get the idea.

Hope this helps? You have got a cabby??

Quick update. Spent this weekend re-trimming the rear seat bench.

I can see why trimmers charge what they do! After a lot of blood, sweat and nearly tears I cracked it.

The old seat frames had a few spots of surface rust, so I got rid of this and re-painted them with black Hammerite:

Rust…

More rust…

No more rust!…

Next job was to transfer the original wire hooks from the old seat covers to the new ones:

The old seat foams were in pretty good condition, but I wanted my seat covers to be nice and tight so I bought some of this…

Upholsterers seat padding..

Heat resistant glue:

Old seat bases:

Spray adhesive applied:

Foam cut to size:

And stuck in place:

Fully covered:

Now I started putting on the covers starting with the base. After completing the base I decided it wasn't tight enough so off it came. 2 hours wasted!

Another layer of upholseters foam was applied to the whole seat.

Worked a treat, but my god was it a struggle to get the cover on. It took me all day to do the rear bench….lots of swearing and my fingers were in tatters by the end of it!

Got them on in the end though.

Tight as a drum!!

My fingers after lots of pushing, shoving and general stuffing the foam into the covers!!! Ouch!

Sunday I started the rear seat which turned out to be harder than the base. 2 layers of padding used on this one too.

The key to getting the seats looking right is time, time, and more time….and a good set of long nose pliers.

Although it took me all weekend, it was worth it in the end. Looking forward to doing the front seats next…NOT!

Did a bit more today.

Thought I'd give me fingers a rest, so started on the door cards.

Already made new cards so it was just a case of fitting them on and mounting the new tweeters:

Tweeters nicely in:

All coming together now. Can't wait to get it all back in but it's gonna have to wait till the respray and engine are sorted.

Hopefully fitting the speakers pods tomorrow and start to tackle the rear 1/4's.

Ordered some Focal components for the rear today. Should be here tomorrow!

Fair play, this is gonna be a lovely cabby when it's finished, it's looking good now! I feel your pain with the seat wires, I spent a week doing my interior, just taking my time. I think I developed DIY tourette's and it still took me 2 days to do my rear bench!

Lol

Thanks. It's a real git to do isn't it!!?

Did you go for cream too? Not sure what it'll be like to keep clean…wet wipes in the glove box me thinks.

MIne have stayed pretty clean, although they have generally darkened afte a year. My major ball ache is that my drivers seat has not lasted and now has a huge hole in it. But I did buy leatherette and not genuine leather

Oh well, gives me an excuse to retrim it again! :D

Ah, nightmare.

Look on the brightside….leather would've been tighter to get on than leatherette and a bigger pain in the arse! Trust me, I found out at the expense of my fingers!

Hopefully the leather should last a bit longer.

It's going to be a weekend car or when the sun is shining so won't be doing too many miles.

Goodies Arrived today!

Excellent quality speakers. Wish I'd have gone for these in the front now but the JBL's are a different tweeter size. I'll see how the JBL's go for now.

New doorcards…

Covered…

Speakers in place…

A few more…Still needs trimming on the rear and stapling but my stapler has packed in!!  :banghead:

Front passenger seat next and finish off the boot build before paint…
