Mohair VS PVC (Canvas) Roof - Which is best ?

hi there all

im in the process of replacing my OEM 19year old roof on my MK1 Karman Cabrio.

I have a choice of Mohair roof OR PVC (canvas) roof that comes OEM.

Which is better to have and Why?

a roof is alot of money and want the best out of my purchase.

I love the look of Mohair (black) but some people say it wll leave "streaks" on the places it folds and this will be visable after even a few weeks. Is this true ?

Your advice is appreciated.

Thank You in Advance.

I would go for mohair personally.

Mine has been on nearly a year and its really easy to keep clean (damp microfibre cloth and cleaning spray)

Still looks like it did aswell.

Mohair will age better than vinyl (my opinion)

I also think it looks better.

I suppose vinyl would be easier to clean if you didnt want to clean it often

thanks for the reply :)

some people tell me canvas last long than mohair and vice versa.

hence im abit confused. im leaning towards the mohair. looks really nice compared to pvc.

also which places in the UK sell mk 1 cabrio roofs @ reasonable prices?

i have been to :

www.basinternational.co.uk

there pricing is really good and they seem to have good quality roofs in both viynal and mohair.
anyone bought from them ? how was the product ?

BAS supply car hoods northern all there roofs and they always get good press.

I used BAS after the previous fitter botched my roof.

I would highly recommend them.

You can buy roofs quite cheap if you can fit yourself.

Both if them will last years IF you look after them.

Try car hoods northern (link on the left)

You will get a discount if you become a paid member on here aswell.

Do you ever see plastic hoods on BMW or Mercedes convertibles?... I rest my case..

Mohair all the way!

I have been quoted £500 from car hoods northern which I think is expensive but it does include the travelling to Edinburgh to do it ?

Depends on what you like, vinyl was used first on the cabbies made by Benke Calico. Available in pin point material first on the early cabbies, followed by pebble grain later and later on the mohair options supplied by Haartz. So if your doing a period restoration and want to keep it origional.
I like both vynil and mohair.
You can fit these your self, just takes a bit of time and patience. If your interested in DIY I can send you some info to assist.

I have never fitted a cabrio roof and will be getting a craftsman who deals with cabrio roofs to install it so that's sorted.

Is there a big difference between "STAYFAST" material and "TWILLFAST" material ?

Is it worth paying extra for the "TWILLFAST" ?

Reason I'm asking is because I'm quoted on both materials.

I believe the twill fast is the same as the German sonneland fabric, quite heavy, but apparently the German Sonneland manufacturer was purchased by Haartz who make the majority of the material as an OEM supplier. So it's up to you which you have.

Personally, I'd go mohair too on the cabrio - looks great and easy to clean…

Best to contact BAS direct for details on materials…

Cheers Hugh.

HI there guys.

Spoke to BAS and their Mohair is Twillfast as they said they found the Stayfast material stretches.

Will be ordering the Twillfast Black Mohair + Cables + Inner Lining in the next month :))
Cant wait.

thank for all your guys help. MUCH APPRECIATED.

What state is the centre section in?
these tend to deteriorate and end up with the pad ruubing and also wearing thin.
This then allows the frame to show through the finished Hood spoiling the effect.

For example

With a new top pad and interliner

People change the top but forget about the centre section which is just as important.

hi

u talking of the padding between the Mohair and the Inner lining correct?
the craftsman who will be installing my roof will be making a brand new 1 with hi density padding inside which will retain its shape even when roof is opened or closed.

i wanted a new 1 from BAS but the cost is the same price as the roof. wow

Okay,
I had a Foam one, but it was no use so I ripped it out.
They can bulk up too much, when folding the hood down.
That was the problem with mine, I bought a complete kit in from the States.
High density and thickness is a fine balance.
BAS don't actually supply the interliner and Rubberised Pad, so I am not sure what they quoted you for?
What was the price they Quoted?
Seems a bit strange.
