OMG, what a load of bother !!! i agree with above, although i do have 83 cabrio, as long as we all love our mk1 Golfs, and treat them with love, mod it if you want, resto if you want, just be cool

Personally i look at the cabrio as a development in mk1s, the first Golf Cabrio, the first golf, hence its a mk1

Apparently the Plates were damaged in transit so that's why there is an indent on the upper rear quarters of the Citi golf.

I thought it was to stiffen it up a bit? not sure where i read it but it makes sence to me.

when people say 'rust monkeys', are they refering to cabby owners or tin top owners?
all golfs rust no matter what the roof is made of.

Listen, when you drive out and about, people say mint mk1 mate, nice mk1, don't see many about etc etc, i get it nearly everyday myself, last one was a guy talking to his mate walking past car saying "look at that mk1, been rebuilt that has, a minter"
Rebuilt lmao, i look after it even thou a daily, it' has had work done on ti like most but that is becasue like most we don't want them rusting, looking crap as they simply are a good looking car.
So we all get the word MK1 mentioned to us when others see our cars.

Apparently? it is there for design and strength, lean on a older REAL lol mk1 tintop in that area and watch it sink in, whereas on the citi it will not or would but with much more effort
As from the 1st mk1 like with any other car the further the version i.e mark goes on the companies better them i.e speed, safety, comfort etc etc.
so can we start a thread saying the series 1 is an utter piece of crap, it isn't as we should all be grateful to it as we wouldn't have ours today, so stuff your gti's where the sun don't shine lmao, i love my mk1 citi golf and that is thanks to the person / persons whom designed and made the first ever mk1 golf.
It's sad really has when you go deeper and really think about it, the arguement will always in the end be that someone wants to be top and wants the most money for it, and hate being told NO plain and simple.

Its funny how people are saying that cabbys aint REAL mk1s basicly as they are updated versions of the tin top yet the GTI tintop was an updated version of the golf that was first launched but thats ok as they were built around the same time.

So going by the theorys of most on here the GTI isnt a REAL mk1.

There are two simple questions that you need to answer:
(1) Did your car leave the factory with a Golf badge on the back ? If yes then you are part way there, you have a Golf :-)
(2) Is your car built on the A1 platform ? If yes then full congratulations are in order, you have a MK1 Golf !! (Why would you want anything else ?)

Didn't realise that the Mexicans had an A1 platform car called a Caribe.

The original poster, asked when a MK1 Golf is not a MK1 Golf. It is easy to answer, it has to be badged Golf and reside on the A1 platform !!
If it says Rabbit, Caribe, Scirocco, Jetta or Caddy then plainly it is not a Golf !! Note all Cabbys had Golf on them !!
