top mounts

i replaced the topmounts on my cabby 2 days ago and have only done about 20 miles - already the top of them have pushed up?! i was told that when this happens they need replacing,
can someone tell my why they have done this already and if this is what should happen or not. i am running coilies < does this make a difference?

cheers

Did you buy them from GSF/ECP?

There crap.  You need FEBI ones mate, altho they are probably hard to get hold of these days….

hi Sturen,

im actually glad you mention these, i have seen these mounts in pics of other mk1's..

im going to the phirm end of the month and he says he can sort em out, as they are specialists..

what brand are these?
are they actually £130 each ?  8O
can i not get these cheaper elsewhere?

how long will these last for?

do you know of the problem we are having, and will these mounts to the trick? and why?

at the phirm it will cost me around £132 for 2 hours labour to dis assemble and re assemble my front suspension..

but if your saying these will work, then id rather not take my car to the phirm and spend that money on the mount.. 2 hours labour instead i could get 1 mount for that price.. i keep spending which adding up is getting costly.. thats why i thought to get it to a specialist and get it sorted.. i have spent alot in trying to rectify this with my mechanic but not getting any joy… the same mechanic has done this for me in the past with the same parts and they were fine but now i dont know why this is happening..

appreciate your help

thanks!

Surely those solid top mounts will introduce noise/viabration into the cabin and become a bit tiresome, maybe not a problem on a quick blast on a sunday only car.

i have tried the Febi ones but no good..   :dontknow:

but when did try em last time they were fine.. got em from vwspares..

i dont understand why this is the case when same process with same mechanic in the past worked fine but now its not happening..

i have my car on Koni Dampening Adjustables.. (lowered) with the mounts shown

 http://www.compbrake.co.uk/TOPMOUNTS/TOPMOUNTS_VW.html

cost about double the price, but if will work and last to me it will be soo well worth it

sturen, whats your word on the mounts you mentioned..

abfmk1 you say surely thely bring noise and vibration up.. do you know this?

my car is my daily and drive it daily.. at the mo the way the mounts are shot its horrid to drive as the mounts havin given way.. i cant take the way it is now with bumps etc.. making things in the car make noise..

i do notice on the pic of the solid mounts there are no rubber…

so whats the big difference?  :dontknow:  :dontknow:  :dontknow:

they will introduce noise, as they are solid with no rubber as you say, but they will not drop as the design wont allow it to. so it depends what you want to trade. they do allow for camber/caster adjustment which is good for very low cars, iv looked at the compbrake site and they seem to be the same so i would say my 1st post at £130 is for two, just check that the £49each inc vat!
found this site as well but no price info!  http://www.motorsportengineering.co.uk/fixed%20top%20mounts.htm

just been on this link - ok im getting fussy now - but the pic spec the one on the left has a different hold positioning - i h=guess that you have to drill the body work ??

it also mentions some are adjustable and some are fixed . whats the difference please??

Post

the adjustable ones have the holes all the way around and the fixed has 3 (i think ) holes.
they are the same type £130 for two or £50 each ie same part number. just check its not £50 plus vat and go for the best deal. i think the 3 hole type is only £5each cheaper. the adjustable ones adjust both caster and camber so you can get the set up just right. you adjust it by turning it round hence why the suspension hole is off centre

Post

ah i see ok. i understand that the adjustable ones will only take a max of 2.5 coilies - but i dont know what 2.5 means its to do with 2.5 narrow spring? but i dontknow what that is.

also i know what camber is but whats caster?

sorry im still learning
