Started poking this:
Untitled by gtifanboy, on Flickr
Untitled by gtifanboy, on Flickr
It looks like the rear panel has been hammered out after a knock, there was also a dent on the rear quarter thats been filled
Untitled by gtifanboy, on Flickr
Untitled by gtifanboy, on Flickr
Is the rectangular piece of metal in the middle of the hole part of the inner arch?

Looks like it could be. If you look at one of my posts from yesterday on my resto thread I've just welded that part in if it helps you for reference?

Just had a look at your thread, it looks like it may be that lip that runs down the end of the inner panel.
I have a new rear panel on the way so once its off I think it will be a bit clearer

Take a look back in my resto thread, you'll find it there. It's actually pretty simple once you got it fitting right. Weld from inside the boot, just drill holes (if you don't have any already from removing the original spot welds) in the boot floor flange and weld through.
Simples!

The way you've linked those two photos, are you putting the engine in the back?
(The engine looks tidy btw)

Not really had much time to do any real progress on this for aaages, but I managed abit today
This hole consisted of about 20% rust and 80% filler and fell to bits when the rear panel came off, so its been on the to do list for a while
20140705_131136 by gtifanboy, on Flickr
Took a while to get the settings right as the metal kept disappearing, just needs a spot of paint and abit of underseal slapped on it.

A few smaller holes welded up, pretty much ready for the rear panel

So we are roughly 9 months into the worlds slowest rear panel replacement and this is how it stands
Pretty much all stuck on apart from three welds on the lower right corner as the drill's battery ran out, its all gone on alright apart from a few hiccups (blown holes/frazzled edges) but they will be easily sorted when Im sorting it for paint

What kind of power do you exspect from the 2.0 16V conversion?

Its a standard abf on kjet fuelling with a tubular manifold so probably about 150-160bhp once its been properly set up

After a 'brief' pause of a year or two I'm back working on the mk1, unfortunately the working space has reduced but hopefully it should still be manageable if a bit cramped.
