I have been toying with the idea of doing this for a while inspired by this thread:

http://www.volkszone.c…13364&highlight=rustoleum

I like the idea that I could do it in my garage which is long but only single width.

I have seen the beetle in the flesh when it was done and it looked amazing, although if you read the whole thread the guy said that it was fading after about 4 years so he sprayed over it.

He did sand off all the paint before spraying it because as someone mentioned it can react with other paints.

TBH though, for that price and the quality of finish I would be happy with 4 years, and surely if it is starting to fade you could just key it again and give it another coat?

I will hopefully be doing my caddy in the summer.

Precisely the point. What you can achieve for the money is phenominal (that isn't spelt right is it?). I'm still going ahead with it, I just figure that it'd be best to give both sides of the coin. If I get four good years out of it and in the mean time I can save up for a proper paint job (or just do another coat), then all is well.

Oh and Cheshire, is a micro climate. We've got the welsh hills on the left, lakes to the north, peaks to the east, and something else to the south. It very rarely drops below 20 degrees C here in cheshire….

From what I've read, it's great for a quick budget 'fixer up' paint job, but if it were on something you wanted to keep for a long time, I'd still invest in a proper paint job. I'm tempted to try it on my golf when I get it back on the road, as it's far from a mint example and the paintwork is quite flat on it; it has had a cheap spray job at some point in the past so not got much to lose really. The key element seems to be the prep and taking your time sanding between coats.

Plastidip looks like a good alternative:

Easily removable too :)

I don't think Rustoleum do metalic paints.

Another downside it seems is you can't get hold of any tester pots. Boo.

This is absolutely amazing.
I'm about to finish the body work on my series 1 and get painting.
I have a bunch of questions. I'll buy the dvd just cant wait.
Did you remove doors to paint them?
What about the nooks and crannies too small for a roller?
Did you do the inside?
I cant wait now, totally inspired. 70's green for me I reckon

I'm just sanding / filling / smoothing / de-rusting mine at the moment. Also taking off as much trim as I can, then I'm going to mask off what I can't take off (or can't be bothered to take off).

Beauty is it's a lot less messy so there's no need to go crazy masking windows/tyres etc etc and can be done a panel at a time etc.

After prep work and masking, I'm going to roller the majority of the car, but I'm also bought some little 'sponge' brushes for bits I can't get with a roller, plus a can of spray paint for any other bits.

And I'm probably going to keep the doors on to be honest.

Oh and the DVD is pretty handy, but all the info you need is online.

They love 'vactan' on the DVD….

The results are amazing! I would never have thought it would look anything near these cars. I'm going to have to look into this myself! Just wondering, how many hours would something like this take?

I'm Norwegian, so my English isn't the best!

Simply put….LOTS

First thing, prep, should take at least a few days, more like a week or two to do a decent job.

It doesn't take too long to lay a coat of paint down, but you need to let it dry or 'bake' properly before you wet sand (Flatting). Some people suggest a week but others just leave it for a day.
The final coat needs to be baked on before cutting back with a polishing compound and then buff buff buff!

A lot more man hours and labour work than doing a spray paint job, but a lot more practical and cheaper for most people.

BUT

It depends how good a job you want! If you just want a quick couple of top coats (rather than changing the colour) then probably not too much

Holy crap… has anyone completed this?!

Does it work, how easy?

I bought my golf for a charity rally (same one as those fellas with the general lee jag early on this thread actually), was pretty buggered anyway but has been sprayed with graffiti..

Been sanding it down & trying to prep in advance of a respray, but a cheaper option would be much better!
