Have you tried putting him as a named driver on your policy? Its the only way you will be able to beat the above quote.

i'm in exactly the same position my son passed 2 months ago, the best price iv'e had is 3700 from coop for mk1 golf 1.1 c

even if we could afford it i don't think we should pay it.

Not a chance, he loves it, said even when upgrades to a new car/next car, we,ll keep the mk1 garaged as weekend / show toy.

Sounds like a tank

Just a quick note to fellow Mk1 Owners. Had the Formel E on the road a year now, needs another mot at the weekend. Apart from some pads in the front i think should go straight through again. 
Still drives well, son uses it every day for work (40miles a day) 
Just had 4 new tyres & a tune up, hes decided now to de-sticker bomb it & go for the retro clean look, I'll keep up the polishing every week & post some more photos
