Suspension ??

Suspension ??

Now then lads,

My front suspension is original i think, as in it has the normal shocks and sprigs on it, now I cant afford coil overs but can afford a new set of the same ones.

Would this be ok ??, as in does anyone think i would be wasting money or would it be a good thing to do ??

I need to change it because it bangs like hell when i have no other option to go over a pot whole, or cant make out a sleeping policeman at night.

I can get the shocks for £40 and the springs for £15 so i think it would make the car better surely ??

You dont need coilovers, depends what you are hoping to achieve but if your original suspension is worn out then the same but new will be an improvement.

Im definatley changing the fronts now, just need to get a spring compressor or I may make one at work if I can be bothered LOL !!

As for your Rivage its lush !!, think when my roof fails I may get a Blue colored one instead of the black, and im ordering some chrome side strips as the aerial looks all alone now, (im sure I heard it whimper)

Iv just polished my wheels again, my other half is getting worried now !! LOL Any way just got my drivers side door to do now, the outer skin has come away at the bottom, so ill be drilling and riveting this week and using some body filler so ill be a busy boy, plus iv got the gloss work in the house to do (MARE) !

If the car is crashing over potholes and you havent got a coilover kit fitted, ie looks original, the first place I would start looking is the top mounts. Couple of pics posted below, of a kackered one and a new one just fitted, even after a few thousand miles myn are a lot closer to the new pic, its the gap between the plate and rubber. You will get a totally transformed ride if these are gone, also when you get new I would also accept nothing less than the Febi brand.

If your putting the time in to change these then I would also order new dampers and boots.

If fitting coilovers you are going to be changing the top mounts I presume and dont forget they are naturally much harsher than the standard setup and will wear out a new set of top mounts quicker. So just make sure that harsher ride is what you are after, coilovers are for a lower racier and hence harsher ride. A good condition standard setup will give a much smoother ride.

id always go for the febi ones, they are stamped on top. The first set I wouldnt bother with as they are not.
But the bottom set looks like it may be missing the small metal collar (Top Mount Spacer Sleeve).

try the following site works out at just under 40 posted for the set including the collar…pays you money takes your choice.
ive used the site a few years back with no problems.

That looks right to me for a cabbie, what I ordered as well, same part nos. The bumpstop, spacer and boot actually less than I paid in 2007  :banghead: only thing that gone up is the top mount itself. Now thats a surprize  :o

If your going through the hassle of getting this lot fitted I would also consider putting new damper inserts in as well, then pretty much new front suspension. I purchased item 100758 which was a fine.
But I notice VW spares aint saying if they have dampers in stock or giving a price, shame.

Found it mate that looks the muts nuts !!,

Very descriptive !!, Think it will work a treat

Oh think you have same wheels as mine ?? 14" Le Castelettes ?? think thats what there called,

Oh was going to say the underneath of my car is sound, covered in lots of WAX OIL, however those little wish bone suspension struts are full of surfice rust so you think they would be worth changeing, i would have to get a kit and there only £40 on ebay !!

What do you think ??
