The Impulse Purchase (Slow Progress Content)

Bit of an update

Got some bits back from the coaters

Very impressed with the finish

And the wishbones freshly coated and polybushed

Started putting the braking system back together but run into some issues so called it a night before getting really stroppy with it

Hi, great work on your mk1 inspiring me :). just a few questions. Is it easy to come by a g60 engine, also I see you have revamped it by sending it away to painters, how much did all those parts cost to spray if you don't mind me asking. Would love to do that to my engine if budget allows. Cheers

Matt

hey buddy
thanks for the comment.
i was lucky with finding mine but they are still out there just keep checking the forums and ebay.
ooh and make sure you get one with the wiring loom.

i've done all the painting of the block and head myslef but had all the brackets etc blasted and coated which cost a grand total of 50 squid

hope this helps and give me a shout if you have any more questions

O ok nicely finished mate. Like the satin black looks clean and OEM. Also I don't suppose you could give me guidance on rust could you?

How much does it generally cost for a general repair of the sills, boot and normal wing areas. Be great if you could help if not ill post a thread.

Thanks again matt

what would like to know about rust? :)

well it's costing £1600 for all the repairs and some smoothing, full window out respray and fabrication of engine mounts oooh and the engine bays getting smoothed and painted as well

Can't wait to get it back but at the same time im happy it's taking longer so i can get everything together for the build

Change of plan with the engine now though
This is going to get the ABF from my mk2 and sourcing a 1.8T to replace it

Had a spare few hours over the last couple of days so thought i'd do this:

This was a couple of hours on wednesday

and a couple more hours today

and finally out:

you're probably wondering why it took so long and why i didn't use a crane.
well firstly i was doing this on my own and secondly, this was the amount of space i had to work with:

Had to be real careful not to hit any of the other cars or welding equipment around me
planning on getting the majority of the bay cleared and the brakes removed to start refurbing the steering rack etc

Also picked up some new brakes for the upped power:

vauxhall (excuse my language) v6 callipers with G60 280mm discs and some nice shiny new brake lines
Was pretty stoked when they lined up to the mk1 hubs without the need for adaptors
just need a clean along with the hubs

Recently i was offered an A3 1.8t with light front damage and as it came with some pretty tasty coillies, audi RS4 18" alloys with pretty much brand new tyres, Forge dump valve and Forge shallow armoured sump it got my attention.
Plus as my mk4 owning friend wanted the coillies and uprated anti roll bars he was willing to go halves.

so far have this and replaced with my standard part

and just need to get my sump off and get hold of the armoured one.

The rest of the A3 is being put back together to replace my other friends mk4 with a blown engine which is a bit of shame because driving it back was pretty exciting.
Definitely stoked on putting the 1.8t in something lighter

It's all coming along nicely Nicko

Have you got the engine mounts for it yet as there is a guy on the berks fb page that can get them but haven't seen the quality & price yet.

I don't actually.
Thanks for the link and then adding me to the engine mounts post. Huuuge help
Just waiting for the pics and prices

The next part i'm unsure of is concerning the clutch.
I have the cable converter but not sure if to just do the hydro conversion

what are peoples thoughts on using either the hydro or the cable for the clutch?

I havn't updated this for a while because i'm still trying to sell the mk2

but…
recently managed to reurb the brakes and hubs, so

In a sort of textured matt black high temp coat

Believe it or not, they are already fitted to the hubs so should do the trick in slowing me down.
Also the ball joints turned up today but minus the fitting bolts so i've knocked some up and now just need to fit.

Next up is to order the suspension and new wishbone fitting kit and it's off with the old and on with the new.

Recently picked up some winter rollers as well in the form of G60 steels.
powder coated with matching centre caps

Also removed a couple more bits ready for the complete new loom to go in.
And parts have been dropped off at the coaters for a bit of color.

I'm just hoping the color will work

Even though this is going to still have the 1.8t, i've just picked up the first piece to make this kinda special.

Not for a long time though
