I don't know if this helps, but I used to go to police auctions to buy lost/stolen items.

My local bobbies had told me that they sold off recovered items - from bikes to hifis (sometimes cars, but usually those confiscated from criminals) after an abligatory 6 months wait to see if anyone claimed them.

Then, dependent on the particular force, they'd either sell them off at auction or give them to the finder.
