It started with a series 1......
A few months back 'him indoors' had to buy a car with a very limited time budget, and had set his eyes on a merc 190! He had to get a car that day and i was stuck at work! He had always known that i wanted a mk1 and saw this one up on autotrader. It was advertised with 6 months tax and a weeks mot! He needed it as his daily driver so it was a huge risk but £390 later he was on his way home!! He came to pick me up from work in it and i was suprised to say the least!!! when we got home it looked like …….
(you can just see me in the drivers seat!)
so after a bit of a kerfuffle we managed to get an mot on it, it only needed a little bit of welding and new front brake pads, which only set us back £10 odd!
so we now had a mk1 with 12 months mot and 6 months tax! we were chuffed!!
we had a little look through the service history that we got with the car and although it isnt massive the service book is all stamped up and confirms the mileage that is now 57k!! which works out at less than 2,000 miles a year!
Dissapointingly a couple of weeks down the line we were a little unlucky and the headgasket decided to commit suicide! after much debating we decided on actually paying a garage to do it!! a first for us!!
We were recommended Yew Tree Garage by one of the guys at our local euro car parts. He seemed really shocked that we didnt know of the garage as they apparently had a nice mk1 gti down there and it was within 3 miles of our place!!
So we called them up and they gave us an estimate that we couldnt say no to!! I was really nervous when taking the car down as i had never had to leave it anywhere before but the AA man said that they were the guys in the know and there was a silver mk1 outside so we felt a little more confidant!
So within a week we had the call……… it was all ready!!
We were chuffed! we managed to get a pic when we went down -
you can see ours parked up next to Mr. Yew Trees mint mk1s (im hoping he doesn't mind having the pics up!!!)
So we are back to having the golf as a daily driver, the plans are to do bodywork! it would really benifit from a full respray but we have a few bits that need tidying up. it also needs a parcel shelf and supports so we will be on the lookout! we are thinking that the aim is to keep it standard!
While we were at the garage we saw a silver gti sat outside. It looked like it really needed some love, and we thought it only polite to ask about it!! turns out it was purchased for the rear disk conversion, but never got round to! it had also been looked round for an mot and seemingly all it needs it a patch welded in the back and maybe a couple of little bits. Turns out they only wanted £200 for it! a deal was struck and we were straight back on payday for the most amazing gift the boyfriend has ever had!!!
although its been sat for 2 years odd it started straight up! its got a few bonus bits - high lift cam, front upper and lower strut braces, rear strut brace, etc,etc
So we are both very proud owners and we will try to keep you all updated on the progress!

how an earth did you manage to get that GTi for only £200. Even a good looking series 1 for £400.
My goodness i am so jealous, all i have ever got 4 £200 is a really crappy 5dr escort in all different colour blues lol

got a pic of the new chin spoiler on (bargin at £4.90!?) and got the chrome grill back on! even though the pic doesnt really show it it has really improved the look of the car!
also managed to get a new wing for the gti for £38 odd so will hopefully get that painted up soon and bolt it on!!

little update, a 'so far today'
there was a hole in the back of the gti just inside where the fuel filler runs -
so after bricking it abit, and some handywork with stuffing a fire blanket between the patch and the fuel lines it turned into this -
not 100% pleased with it, could be better, but hopefully an mot pass?

got a little bit more done today inbetween sorting a million and one things out!!
took out the seats from the gti, was told they came from a corrado (?) really supportive but not really to my taste and the drivers seat has a rip -
then i was faced with what was left of the dash!
so i gave the new seats a quick clean up -
and then luckily i had a few dash bits lying around so gave them a quick clean up and ……..

LOL! when getting the old seats out they needed a little bit of 'gentle persuasion' and the axe was the first thing that came to hand!!!
bit of an update today.. the gti needed some exhaust mount rubbers as it was shaking all over the place so got them fitted up this evening. also got a new front spoiler and a waterpump waiting for me to pick it up!!! slowly getting there!!
