New golf, same problem
Its unlikely to be the alternator itself, it'll be just the voltage regulator thats attached to it.
If you take it to a specialist they'll sort it out for around ?15 or so (usually) not sure if you can buy the regulators themselves or not.
I used some 2x6mm wire from the alternator to the battery to improve charging, worked a treat.

Ive actually got a spare voltage regulator but I fear its probably as bad as the one thats in. I think they,re only cheap from gsf.
I think I'l try another live from the alternator, certainly cant hurt eh?

just incase anyone finds this through the search engine just like to say i've resolved the problem and it was a knackered belt so it was slipping on the alternator and not giving out enough power.
There are too many online users to list.
