My 20VT Build (Updated 13/04/10)

Wel not much to show yet as i have been busy collecting all the parts ready for an attempt on a 20vt conversion on my MK1.

I think i have posted elsewhere but the list of things you need seems endless and i can see when somebody said to me buy an unfinished project or even one that has been done as it saves a lot of hassle.

Me being me i shunned that advice and went for it, i have finished my shopping list and it will be all systems go on the 14th-15th. Im getting help (lots) of some club members and the "Black Art" of getting the wiring done is also from a fellow club member and incidently the chap i brought the engine off.

Here is the car…………..

Here is the new engine…………….

And here is the most complete tool set you have ever seen lol lol lol

I drained all the fluids today and took a few things off to try to get a bit of a head start.

I will be updating the thread once things get going, If anyone is thinking of doing a similar conversion i would advise make a list carefully as i have forgoton loads of things that had me in panic trying to get them.

The engine is a AGU with a K03 turbo on and i will be using a 02A gearbox and a cable change of a Corrado.

The car is off the road now until next year so i have plenty of time but i like to get things finnished quite quickly once i start so fingers crossed.

Good luck mate, its well out of my capabilities.
Can`t wait to see how you get on and the finished car.

Sure "Pie" will help if you need it, as he has done a couple.
My AGU lump sits quite low in the engine bay. Not sure if thats the same for all.
Not sure if its possible to raise it slightly, there is room between the bonnet and engine.

Just a thought.

Cheers all yes Pie is being roped in to help hopefully if he is not away with work.

I dont know about the engine sitting low maybe depends on the mounts ??

My one will not be very pretty under the bonnet like yours mate none of that hidden wiring stuff for me as long as it works i will be happy.

I have read so much about it in theroy the only really hard parts looks like the wiring and as stated that is all taken of. Time will tell but a have a few good people on my side.

We jacked underneath the gearbox then just held the engine with the hoist(tractor :P ) and undid all the mounts, then we lowered jack and brought the engine out at an angle. It was simple it got caught once on the brake servo but easily freed

I think we are going to do the reverse on putting the 20vt in but i have a feeling it will be more tricky.

Good luck with your engine swap mate.

Well more work today at a very slow pace as it take me ages to get my head around it all.

Im going to be running a 02A box and have got a cable change off a Corrado to go on it, so today i thought i had a spare hour so i would go down the barn and take off the old rod change and gear stick etc.

Well it took me ages as i just couldnt get the small bolt holding the rod on which was under the car eventually i sussed it and its off.

I then offered the Corrado item up and am going to have to do a little bit of work to make it all fit, I asked on another Forum and somebody gave me some excellent pictures of how if should be done by making a couple of brackets up, So this will be Wednesdays task.

All good fun.

Have you thought about having the gear stick sitting higher up from the trans mision tunnel ie like a motorsport tower shifter ??
As im thinking of doing this with my golf, and one that i have seen done is on four extended shafts that bolt to the tower and then to the transmision tunnel, probably not explained very well

my mate ran the cables under the car, and up into the cabin through some elongated holes cut infront of the original gear lever, and then bolted the new gear change assembly in the same place as the old one…

just so you know it is possible to do this, and the cables this way means the gear lever is in the same position as before….

the carpet then went on top of everything and looked factory

Well did a little bit more today with a mate of mine and am pleased with the results i have read lots of ways of mounting the cable change into the car but was not really sure what way to do it. In the end we came up with an idea it ment we had to do a litte bit of work but did not have to start cutting bits away from the car as i wanted to avoid this.

First off we measured up and made a little bracket to use to hold the back of the gear changer in place.

Then we worked out where the front bolt was going to be coming through the car and marked it off and drilled through.

Then it was under the car to grind off the bottom of the bolts that are atteached on the underside we drilled these from the top but to make sure we got a good seal and it fitted flushed i thought it would be a good idea.

Next up was a test fit but we soon realised that the orginal bolts at the back of the changer why once the bracket was on were going to be to short, so we then cut them off and welded some longer bolts on.

Then we put it all back on the car but i had forgoton about the gear stick now not being long enough so off it all came again. I then came up with an idea !!!!!!!!!!!

We cut just under the bend then welded up i was going to sleeve it and i may well do in the future but i will see how this goes first.

Offered it all and bolted down, Im going to cut a rubber sheet to place underneath and on the top to seal then use some sealant to make all water tight. The gear gator is not properly connected by you get the idea.

Im sure its been done this way before and maybe a easier way to do it but this seems to work and im a happy bunny. Just got to make up a bracket for the underside to keep cables away fro the exhaust but that can be done late.

Well just got out of the bath after a good day on the MK1

We got on well and had to do lots of prep work ready to put the engine in by swapping things over etc

We encountered a few problems but im pleased to say we got round them all one way or another. (My camera fell completley in a pot of oil fully submergered but amazingly seems ok    )

Unfortunally we found a bag of "rags" and some of the lads got quite excited im sure you will see the pictures !!!!!!
