Plasticfantastic's project corner. (pic heavy)

Hi all,

I thought rather than have lots of project threads on numerous forums, it would be easir to have 1 thread for all projects, so updates would be easier!

I'll stat by introducing my projects (well vag only projects! you'll notice others in the background of pictures)

Firt up is my current daily, it started out life as a 1991 Golf mk2 8v gti, but now has a 2ltr 16v abf on digi, 280mm brakes and a few other tweeks.

have covered around 2,000 miles since the conversion and she's running prety well, a couple of small issues still to sort. main job is to search for any rust, turrets or under the plastics, i will probably re underseal it when it cones off the road for winter.

next up is the first mk1 i bought, it's a 1.1c 2 door non sunroof. when i went to view it wasn't witht the intention of buying, as the seller also had a. '87 mk2 golf 8v 2 door, but was too rusty for me(bang) but i fell in love with the mk1 and found myself towing it home! spent a while cleaning it up for putting into dry storage (where she's already been for the last 9 years).

As i got her…

Here's a link to the original thread with more pics,

http://"http://www.vwgolfmk1.org.uk/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=68556"

As yet i dont really have a final plan for her, but i'll put her to one side for now, and decide another day!

next up, as i really started to get into the mk1 i remembered that there was a caddy just down the road that had been growing into the hedge for around ten years, but i thought it was worth a risk at fifty pounds!

Another link to original thread with more pics!

Overall plan for this one is it will have the whole bed and rear chassis removed and rebuilt to hang a mk2 escort axle, the it will have a front mounted 2ltr 16v abf running digi management and a ford type 9 box. but again for now she is going into storage, probably till next year, as i gather parts and finish a few other projects!

which brings us onto my newest purchase. As i was scraping rust out of the white caddy my neighbour happened to mention that a local farmer had offered him one recently. that night after parting with fifty pounds we towed it home!

She's been off the road for over a year now and certainly has her issues but on the whole she seems solid!:music: for the last 10 years its been owned by a local farmer and only done around 4,000 miles a year. but it's a non runner at the moment as the inlet manifold bolts have sheared off in the head(bang)

this one is now having a full strip down and re-paint (except the engine bay) then she will be back on the road as soon as possible! (hopefully!)

im also doing a full bare shell rebuild on my mates '87 mk2 golf 8v, i'll update with that later.

'B' pillar is now sorted….

picked up a car for donor parts last week! it's a '94 mk3 16v, so the engine, loom and ecu are for the white caddy, which leaves me with a type 9 box to get but i know of a few so should be sorted soon, and hopefully a quaife diff for my mk2 escort axle. The gearbox and shifter out of the mk3 will be going in my mk2 ABF over winter as the rod change box i left in after the conversion is starting to groan a little!

Also the front seats from the mk3 will be modified to go into the maroon caddy, and most other parts will be stripped to be sold, so hopefully i will get my moneys worth out of it, luckily it only set me back 150 pounds!

progress has slowed a little on the maroon caddy, wiring is now removed as well as most of the tar from the footwells. today i cut out all the rust from the bed ready for when my steel arrives so i can finish my repair sections. i have a few bit to repair on the croossmembers so that will keep me busy.

a couple of the crossmembers need some repairs, but hopefully it seems that only these areas are affected!

i also had a quick start on flatting back some of the paint on the bed and side.

hopefully it will start to look better when i have some metal to weld back in!

Accuracy so far seems spot on, still needs a little fetteling in the pics. i have a 2m x 1m x 1.6mm sheet getting delivered next week and i will be cutting it into 600mm x 200mm pieces, or possibly bed width x 200mm. I will report back once i have it welded in and i have tried fitting a larger piece.

Once these repair sections are sorted next on the list is chassis rails and then we will have a go at making repair sections for the tapered ends of the bed, i dont need any for mine but i thought it may be of interest to others?!

have started flatting paint off around cab and doors, allso put a small skim of filler down one side to see how far off it was, seems pretty straight!

the last of the screw holes in the bed sides and tops were plugged with spot welds

Also modified the seats out of the mk3 to fit, went well and im very happy with how they look in the caddy

Just a little bit of a bend needed

And a little bit of added strength

I also cut the mounts out of the mk3, and started to fit

Just need to finish welding the mounts in and paint the seat frames, finished pics tomorrow! and i need to trim the side trays so i can lower the seats!

Post

I haven't really got a plan for the mk1 at the moment as there are a few projects that will need doing before i start her!

lots of ideas have crossed my mind biggest question is to modify or keep standard as a 1.1c. Part of me would really love to seam weld the shell, full cage etc……. even thought about using the abf running gear from my mk2. got a vr6 front end that would probably fit in the mk2 to keep it going  :|

pics of finished seat mounts commin up.

Hi all,

another quick update for you all while i stop for a quick coffee.

got the other repair done to the rear screen surround…..(sorry some of the pics are blurry)

Also decided to get rid of the spare wiper mounts as i need to do a couple of repairs around the front screen….

Hopefully i will have them all welded in tonight,  comments appreciated.

Also now looks like i will be spraying the engine bay at the same time, which has got me thinking about removing the rain tray (scuttle?!) under the bonnet (i always get carried away with projects (bang)). I know how i will sort the heater, so are there any bad points to doing this? do you get more noise/smell in the cab?! is it ok for daily use or show only?!

Cheers all

Hi all,

Sorry updates have been far between lately, but other commitments have meant that i haven't had much time on the caddy. Although today i managed a couple of hours, and with the steel finally in my workshop i decided to have another go at the bed repair sections…………

the sections will have 7 complete ribs with just over half a rib each end, they will be slightly re-aligned before pressing compared to the ones in the photo's.

i placed it into the bed to see how it looked…

all seems great so far, im happy with the press and tooling and now happy with the pitch of the ribs. but i have decided that 1.6mm sheet is total overkill, so i will be ordering in some 1.2mm sheet which will be plenty as the original bed is only 1mm.

steel will be ordered this week, so these will be available soo to those interested?!

Hi all,

Well i was really hoping that the 1.2mm sheet would be delivered today so i could start on my bed repairs, but it's going to be next week now :bh

so instead today i had a go at the rear skirt…………..

Its a little stronger than standard as it's made from 2mm sheet. Its only had a quick grind so far, metal fiinishing will be done tomorrow, along with the repairs to the tailgate supports/hinges. I'm also hoping to start on the rear bumper this weekend.
