my new 79 golf

my new 79 golf

drove for 3 hours friday night so i could get to work on th mk1 one today.

got a lot done though:
removed the tiny old master cylinder:

found the spot welds on the washer bottle:

drilled them out:

and removed it:

i plan on putting a small bottle inside the scuttle.

found the spot welds on the drivers side chassis leg:

cut it off:

figured out where to put it back:

chopped out the battery tray:

removed the passengers wing ready to put horn in there and hide wires:

hole here to exit above fuse box:

hole here to get into front cross member:

wire will then run through cross member to other side.
chopped the wires and pulled them into car ready to reconnect in wing:

it will look so much better without these in the bay.
going to put battery in boot.

looking a lot better already without tray and wires:

removed the dash to make it easier to do wiring, brake pedal and hydro clutch:

all in all a busy day.

plan to use the mk4 hydro clutch arrangement.
not sure about brakes was gonna go for 2 x xmaster cylinder but been told i can get a remote servo that runs like an electric pump which should give good brakes and not be seen??? looking into this at the moment??

should be close to engine fit by next week i hope !!!!!

picking up BBS RS on Monday!!!!

i want the seats redone in the same material but i cant seem to get hold of it from anywhere.
realistically i need enough to cover both front seats???
i want to stick with the standard look interior. i like the low backs a lot.

spent the day working on the car again today the guys at the garage are excellent, first time anything like this has been attempted. just using info off forums to get through it.

made some progress:

stripped down front wishbones, hubs etc ready to paint them all:

koni coilover ready for clean:

mk4 empty engine bay:

stripped off air con and power steering pumps, then cut down bracket:

unneeded parts:

took off timing belt and got engine side mount on:

hanging about to get dropped in:

carl and michael lining it up:

attempting to fit:

gearbox side mount lined up:

attempting to get the rear mount to line up :

engine in on both side mounts and rear mount:

got it in bar the front mount:

the front is sitting a little high but i think when the front mount is on this will be sorted??

next job is to needle gun off all the dirt and underseal, then paint inner arches with black stonechip paint to protect it all.

this is starting to get along really well now.

gonna take off gear linkages and selector tower ready to fit.

i still need a pair of genuine wings to put on it.

not too sure about driveshafts. i measured the mk1 ones and they are 80mm from hole centre to centre the mk4 are 90mm. everyone talks about 100mm driveshafts??????

Got a bit more done yesterday:

got the inner wings ready to be cleaned up for a paint:

tried one side with a sander:

tried the other side with a needle gun, bit more time consuming but better result i think:

removed the gear linkages form the mk1:

and also from the mk4:

looks like it will be reasonably straightforward to fit!!! i hope!!!

had the trusty hammerite out again, got everything done, except the rear beam which is cleaned up and ready for paint on wednesday:

so thats nearly all the suspension parts painted up for about £6, been a bit time consuming cos they took a while to clean, but i think they have turned out great.

Dont have any pics to show the hight but both mine and Bigadd's 1.8T's looked to high at the front when fitted, both were ok with the bonnet on.
