i think people start low with a reserve to entise bids, people will bid on the chance the reserve may be low for the car in question, its actually more to put a reserve on than to start with a high price as motors section is standard ?8.cheers

I think reserves defeat the whole point of ebay. If people want a particular price for an object they should sell it on the relevant site, what with all the fees involved. People go on there for a bargain......I always think twice about bidding on something with a reserve.

That car looks sweet.

If you start off with a low price I think you will gather a lot of interested watchers. I know quite a few will never bid but you only need to grab the eye of a few extra bidders and that will then drive the price up.

Weve sold on ebay and often start items that have fetched 100s and started off at 99p. Also with no reserve, but can undertsand with a car like that why he would have a reserve.

Start at 99P.
Lots will bid early and they will keep it in their e bay because of it. at the end of the day if you want to sell it the highest bidder will win regardless of where you started but i do believe it attracts more people

If there's a reserve then it makes sense to do this. Anyway as said the higher the starting price the more you have to pay so what's the point?

Stunning car though, gorgeous.

He's wasted a listing fee as the car wont sell! you could put a ?50k bid on it and i can guarantee you it wont be sat on your driveway any time soon. The reason is simple, he's been stupid enough to add this line of text:

Please note this vehicle is advertised elsewhere, therefore I reserve the right to remove from e-bay if sold elsewhere.

ebay have really tightened up on their rules recently and will remove the listing for breach of their terms and conditions.

eBay themselves, don't browse the adverts looking for it though. They rely on others to report rule breaks!

thats not true paul. Ive fallen foul of the rules a couple of times for using the terms 'like new' & 'This item is advertised elsewhere, therefore I reserve the right to remove from ebay'. Ebay have allowed the auctions to run till the last few mins and then removed them. The email I've received from them on both occasions told me they now filter every advert to ensure it complies with their rules and continuous rule breaking would lead to a ban.

It may be a scare mongering tactic but i personally cant see it as my items that have been removed have always been low value items (eg, t-shirts) which aren't exactly going to cause people to complain.

Start the bidding at 99p and use a friend to apply the reserve price near the end of the auction.

eBay rules are a farce geared to them making more money, some even contradict British Law, but if you search and search and search eBay help pages they will admit that fact.

Oh and if you think using a mate to bid is underhand then you know nothing about auctions. Been done in the ring for since the year dot, even the auctioneers do it to push their commission or help a seller.

Wow just looked - ?2550 and reserve still not met!

you could whack in a 15k bid which should reveal the reserve, then retract the bid.

or just ask the seller…

Hiding the reserve is a strange selling tactic. Its like playing a game of smoke & mirrors, just when you're trying to gain someone's trust!
