Got me to realise what was going on with my front set-up: with lowered springs it was sitting only just off the bump stops.
My mechanic explained to me that if you don't fit shock absorbers with shortened body, you take up the compression space - which in a Golf I guess is about 50mm at standard. So my current 50mm (30 in GTI) lowering gives very little upward movement for the wheel.
I was cautioned about shortening the bump-stop too far: that it is part of the design integrity. I was also told about progressive compressing bump stops - gives a little more movement, whilst still protecting the strut body.
