Mk 1 Golf Clipper Running Problems

yeap twists round, has a rubber gasket under it, so if really tight I would get a new one of them. Available from VW and only a couple of quid.

To help you to twist round need to find something the right size that can bridge two of the gaps together to help you get some purchase. Try an expansion bar from your socket set.

After looking in the tank there is a little loose rust and also the tank is rusting.

After replacing the in-line filter the car seems to run better however we are replacing the tank and going to blow back the fuel lines and replace the in-line filter once fitted.

Will update once this is done.

The in-line filter we took off and replaced was full of rust!!

Have some good pictures but cannot upload, unless someone can do this for us?? I have the pictures available to email if someone can help??

Almost reluctant to reply as I'm no expert but did have about 6-9 months of similar issues and despite being poured over by those who specialised the very long story cut short is that it was the manual fuel pump which i ultimately replaced via euro car Parts for about ?12 after going thru' everything electrical.

Also had a thread running on here for many months with lots of advice but did not solve the problem until an auto electrician became convinced it was fuel related. Sods law it was the last thing replaced and was the cheapest !

So, … if all else fails !!

yep that fuel tank would be removed from my car at the earliest opportunity!  also while its out blow all the fuel lines thru to make sure you get all the rust out of them.
any fuel left in the tank i would pour into a container and keep for cleaning purposes, wouldnt be going anywhere near the new tank!

bottom of tank should not look like that, that rust going through is going to cause problems. Check the pickup pipe is clear on the fuel sender when you clean/replace and work you way forwards from there, cleaning as you go.

Have you found out why there is debris in the bottom of the tank. (edit just read filler neck replaced). You still need to find out how that debris got there.

Just did something like this on my sisters car. The filler neck is on its way out and so rust has got into the fuel system. Still haven't done it yet, but will next time she brings it down.

Anyway we drained the tank of fuel using an electrical fuel pump and a 20 litre fuel can. All filtered of course. Then we took the sender unit off. The previous owner had made a real hash of taking this off previously with large chunks of it missing and sealed over with some silicone.

Anyway after leaving it to vent over night we got the hoover in the tank and sucked all the crap out of the tank. If anyone else does this just make sure you have a fire extinguisher to hand as i wouldn't advise doing this really but it did the job quite well.

Anyway replaced the in line fuel filter and did the filter inside the carb. How many people have replaced/cleaned that one??? Its located, on a weber carb, just below the fuel intake, with a 19mm plug. If you haven't chack it out  :)

mini old skool of course - 1310, lightened and balanced bottom end, fast road cam, MG head, Megajolt + EDIS, stripped out interior
