restoring a 79 GTI..badly painted

when you say dents i take it you mean he didnt get the panels flat from the start yea?

shame mate
yeah, he didn't prime it and give it a guide coat to find the low or high spots, in fact i don't think he primed it at all :dontknow:  the rear arche have 3 different lines to them and the swage line on the rear quarter looks like a child preped it, there are still small cer park dents all down the dors at least 5 on each, and a large filler spot that he hadn't flatened right, there are also spots where he hadn't rubbed it down at all, and bit where the paint was chipped on the previous spray job, he even missed the front edge of the wing altogether, and it's just laquered primer.it is a shame, but i'm not gonna let it knock me back.this is probably a problem that would end some projects, as it is soo dissheartening!!!!

you've done the right thing getting it back mate, there's plenty of quality body shops in the UK, you may have to travel but the dream will come true for sure.

to be honest there are quite a few around this area, and i only went with that guy because a) it was convenient,
and b) because he was recommended by the guy who welded it up, and he done a nice job.

such a waste of time. :?

to paint the engine bay, underside and top, ?1100, i told him at the time not to undersell himself and that i wanted a good job, and that it had to be right. turns out he just didn't listen to a word i said, on several visits i pointed out bits i wasn't happy with, arches, seal not removed, dents ,bits not rubbed down properly and such, even to the point that when we had to move it out side, the last thing i said was could you make sure it's covered up, not only because it may rain, but because there's a lot of 'do as you likeys' around that area, and they'd probably weigh it in. any way wen't to collect it and there it was, out in the open. unbelievable.  :dontknow:

he was a recommended long time sprayer apparently, he restored fiat 500 and lambaetta's, don't think he knew what a golf should look like tbh.

yeah. he's a nice guy too, i had him quote to restore my 57 panel van,
7k, to replace nearly all the panels and respray it. thought that was a bargain tbh, but the whole project was a bit too much for me. :dontknow:

Glad you've got your car back from that painter, as already mentioned a proper inside out job is going top cost ?1500 and upwards, depending on the amount of hours spent in prep work. The difference in a quailty spray job, is years later down the line, and it still looks good.

Oh and I love your mk2 esp on those silver d90's 8)

Keep up the good work, the paint will soon be sorted, and you be building it up with all the nice new bits, watching it take shape

Pete.
