Hi all

A little bit of history on my VAG ownership. Started many moons ago with a 1985 Scirocco GTX that my uncle gave me. It needed too much work in the end so it made way for……………….a 1981 MK1 Golf GTi 1.6.

That too needed work (new radiator, brakes, complete engine rebuild) but due to losing the garage space it had to go (gutted is an understatement) before it was finished.

Had a few months with a Leon Cupra R when I met the missus, and a few years later a Mk3 Golf CL. Which kind of fell apart on a daily basis and in the end went to the great VW garage in the sky lol

That was a year ago and I'm now hunting for a decent Mk1 GTi again. Hopefully wont take too long…….will it?!

Hi and welcome!

There's always Golfs for sale here, and advice about what to look for when buying. Although having owned and worked on one you probably know plenty already! Check out our For Sale section. You'll be back in one in no time.  :y:

Cheers, hopefully sooner rather than later.

Seems theres a fair few cabbys going (time of year I suppose) and few tin tops in my price range (el cheapo), but we shall see. I drop a post in the Wanted section and see what happens.

Welcome Spudd,

Glad you're going back to the Mk1!

I had a Mk3 CL, was yours a 1.4?

Mine drove like a brick!  :banghead:

Good luck with the search!

Cheers mate, nah mine was an 1800 so got the luxury of power steering. The suspension was shot though, so it wobbled like a yank chasing a burger.

Did manage to get a free windscreen from Autoglass though.

The rest of the car was a heap, brakes didnt work, at all. Word of advice, dont go to the Nationwide Autocentre (thats another story). And it just gave up the ghost about a year ago.

Ah, mine was fun too…

If you dipped the clutch it would cute out and because it was all power assisted everything got a bit "stiff" but at the same time, liked to roll out on round-a-bouts haha!

Never did find the problem, part exd it for a MK4 :D

Good story though..?

Not on their part no lol

I took it there for the free brake check (pedal would hit the floor and do next to nowt) and they said i needed new front pads and a rear wheel cylinder (drivers side) as it was leaking (Amongst a few other jobs that needed doing). Said fine and had them do the work. Brakes are not one of my preferred working areas.

Still the brakes were as bad and it turned out i needed a new master cylinder. They wanted ?250 to replace and fit it. Told them no chance and I'd do it myself

Got the MC from GSF for ?45, the Haynes manual for ?16, and did it myself in about 2 hours.

On bleeding the brakes it turned out that the front pads were changed but the wheel cylinder wasnt. The rear bleed nipples hadnt been touched in years and so the brakes werent bled, and the fluid wasnt changed either.

Cowboys isnt the word

Spuddgunn Hiya mate… your near enough my name sake when it's shortened lol… Spudd and Spud ?!?!!?  Confusing times ahead lol!?!?

Firstly let me welcome you to the site mate… hopefully you'll love it here.  It's more of a family oriantated (how the hell do you spell that) feel here.  Full of helpfull people and a pretty good scene for meets.

If you're on the look out for a motor mate then I suggest looking on our for sale section.  But.. to help a fellow mk1 enthusiast, you may also want to check these:-

www.ebay.co.uk - Saw loads here and many hadn't been too well looked after or weren't as described but not to say you'll experience the same.

www.wagenwheels.co.uk - expensive and never viewed any off of here but the option is there

www.pistonheads.co.uk- some good cars come up through here now and again so worth a look

www.edition38.com/forums - you'll need to sign up but it's free.. go to the classifieds section. It's where I got my mk1 from

www.carandclassic.co.uk - not really seen much on here but not to say you wont.

Then there's friday ads etc mate….Please read the buyers guide though mate on this site. Tells you what to look out for…

Glad you're back with us bud and hope to see you at a regional/national meet… until then, get posting and get to know people!!

Nice one, I've read of 20valvers in mk1 and would love to have a) the car b) the time c) the money and d) the ability to do something like that.

But fair play and well done to getting it done on your drive, bens_cab.

I've trawled ebay for a while now, the only real 'local' ones are in bits which isnt helpful for me. I'm on edition38 and have posted on there too so hopefully might find something. Also checked out practical classics but thats fairly quiet on there.

I've even checked the DVLA for WFE 355W again but they have no record of it. Chances are its been scrapped  :(

A slight update on the whereabouts of WFE 355W

My old man got rid of it when we lost the garage space, and it went to a lad down Smorrel Lane in Bedworth

Anyone know any mk1 owners around them parts?

No joy so far in finding it. I've now expanded my search to include cabby's

Saw a nice blue/black one outside the garage on heath end road tonight which made my mind up to include them lol
