I'm not a psychiatrist but I imagine his other half is now fed up of his obsession with the car, and has said something along the lines of "That's it! I insist you put it up for sale!!!" so he's followed his wife's instructions to the letter…..but not the numbers, and has priced it so it either never sells, or if it does he can enjoy himself a bit with the money.

Yeah deadly, looks like a chav mobile to me.

Sure it goes well but i wouldn't be seen dead in it, in fact i'd have to be paid to drive it.

I'm kinda with Raul, partly, in a way. Are GTI Engineering still around? No? Why not? Possibly because what they were doing, has been done since in teh DIY environment and much more cost effectively than they were doing it. In the 80 and early 90s, there was much less stuff on the internet and the average GTI enthusiast who wanted a bit more power, either had to work things out themselves, read articles in magazines (which of course never give quite so much technical information as needed) and fill in the gaps, or go to a tuning firm like GTI Engineering.

Also all the 'specialness' of the GTI Engineering, has probably worn out now, with 170k miles on it.

I'd like to see what it did on the rollers but I think the closure of GTI Engineering was more likely to do with the recession of the early/mid 90's than them performing poor quality conversions.

I'd personally LOVE that car.  I'd happily use it everyday.

What's wrong with driving a "chav-mobile" anyway?

Comeon, 190bhp in a Mk2 shells gotta be as much fun as you can have with your clothes on! lol

I think that's rather good, I was looking at some zender turbo splits the other day for my mk1 and I do appreciate 80's/90's body kits.

I would disagree with it being a chav-mobile.

It's still way overpriced though.

Yradave says relax.

i can get the hate because its a mk2 with a kit

its 170,000 miles goes for nothing, the specialness will be gone because of the miles??is that why a 170,000 mile mk1 gti sucks?it doesnt because it goes for nothing,if thats got 170,000 miles on it look at the condition of it,its well pampered so probably well serviced

its running period splits and the rest of the GTi E bits like the kit and the interior bits they may be defunkt now but this was a 30,000 car back in the day,i do think its more a 5g car now and in this climate than 7 1/2 but 750 quid? get over it

in mk1 terms this is a 16s and youd pull your teeth out for one of them in original nick, maybe it was a mistake expecting anything other than a purists stance but look at it for what it is

its not just a 2l bottom end and a bit plastic on a mk2 this was a full on conversion, retro is in didnt you hear

Yep, things wear out over time, 170k miles will place an amount of wear on the engine, which can't be seen in the pics alone, or even by going to see the car.

I'd dispute the figures, was it really a ?30,000 car at one time? Not sure it will fetch ?5000 in the current climate either. But enough guesswork, as always the only way we'd know is to know the sale price of the transaction that actually takes place.

I'd say all told, Oettinger 16S is more desirable than a GTI Engineering RE2000 Mk2 Golf, although I can see where you're coming from. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the 16S received VW approval, was sold through the (French) dealer chain and was marketed by VW. GTI Engineering cars were never marketed in the same way so the 'model' doesn't have the same status.

Yep, completely agree. Unfortunately, retro doesn't seem to sell cars these days.

truth is nothing sells these days but 750 quid comments are way out of line, the feature on that car shows its more clean and well serviced 170 k will take its toll on components but its easy enough to check for basic mileage damage with easy panda checks and whose not had a 300,000+ mk1 thats ran like a sweetie?put it on a dyno and check the power?even if its had new valve stems and 3 timing belts and 17 oil changes if its serviced its serviced

iirc wasnt there a dealership or something set up with Gti E that they fired out the golfs and jetta's and it was semi recognised so i still stand by the GTi E car being of a similar standing with a 16s which was basically a 1.6 mk1 with a 16v head and some add-ons compared to a 2.0 bottom end and add ons both methods unavailable at time bhp increase options and the 30g ticket is pretty close, they were mid to high 20s depending on spec and you could source them through VW dealerships or at least my local was sympathetic

its a well maintained mid range mileage mk2(12,000ish a year)thats period original and comprehensively upratted from new plus scene points with the feature. Its a lot and id go with what you said about his missus poking him but he could just be firing it in high expecting mike brewster to talk him down to 750 quid so they can eet in the middle
