The engine will have 18 or 16 on the block . Look at the back of the block from underneath - it will be on the block just above the sump level.

then again another spanner in the works

a 1.8GTI head will fit on a 1.6 Block. maybe its been changed..

Only real way is as stated already. Etched in the block will be the code., under head, between plugs 3-4 ..flat area. Might be difficult to see..

also underneath, exhaust side  will be a 1.8 or 1.6 cast into the block. Big letters!

then again bigger spanner in the works, 1.8L internals will fit a 1.6L block…  :banghead: :)

The 1.8 stamped on the block doesn't mean its a 1.8! The EG means its a 1.6.

The EG defines the engine code, which also defines the capacity, since each variation of capacity has its own code.

The 1.8 stamped on the block, doesn't mean its a 1.8. Basically there's 2 Mk1 Golf engine variations, small block and big block. The big block engines are all pretty much exactly the same externally, its only the internal machining to accept the crank (which is a different stroke) and bore (which is larger) which varies. I think (Dubboy might be able to correct me on this one, its to do with how they went through the production process) they rationalised things and manufactured the block, or produced a small variation of the block, which could be used for both 1.8 and 1.6 engines. When they did this, they also cast 1.8 into the exterior of the engine, to signify this. Later on in the process, the internal machining was done which led to it being a 1.6 EG engine or 1.8 (whatever it was - might have been DX or EX or others, eg Audi stuff) engine. At this point too, they'd have applied the engine code EG and maybe the number.

I think there's big block 1.3s and 1.5s with 1.6 stamped on them?

what the difference between 1.6 and 1.8 heads

as some 1.6 heads i've seen the water flange comes out of the other side of the engine

this is my engine before the strip down

I think the heads are interchangeable so you have a 1.8 head on a 1.6 block. I don't know for sure though, but nobody's come forwards to say for sure yet. Fingers x someone can solve your mystery though.

what would you gain from putting a 1.8 head on a 1.6 block tho???

the saga continues

measured the bore tonight and it's around 81mm (need some digital verners really)

thats what the haynes manual says 1.5, 1.6 and 1.8 pistons are all the same size.

the stroke on my Eg block is 86.5mm

but the haynes says 1.6 EG should be a 80mm stroke

so whats going one!!!! :banghead:  :banghead:
