Check the engine number and look it up....The important parts of the engine number are the first two letters. Once you have this there are loads of VW sites that will tell you exactly what spec engine you have.

check the water outlet on the front of the head,  if it comes from the left  inbetween 1 & 2 cylinder it's a 1600

Mk1 2l TSR G60.  .getting. There twice as fast

Mk1 lhd diesel…….getting. There for half the cost

jim's right

1600 water out let comes out at an angle between cylinder 1 & 2.

1800 water outlet comes out straight between 3 & 4 I think.

not really, just bought it as a 1.6gti, it's registered as a 1.6gti

the water pipe with the temp sensor init come between the 3 & 4 so if you guys are correct it means i've got a 1.8 not a 1.6

You have a 1.6 then. Cylinder 1 is on the right (of the car), ie nearest the chassis leg/wing; and lakesk8's guide is the wrong way round.

if cylinder 1 is on the right like you say paul.

my water temp sensor and thermo time switch is on the right between 1 & 2

it comes straight out of the head

i've got the numbers of the left hand side just under the rocker cover where can i find out what they mean

Just checked, I think lakesk8 is right, not wrong, in which case you have a 1.6. Apologies!!!!

I would say that knowing the model year and if the engine is original might help. The early GTi used a 1.6, water outlet right side on an angle, while around 82' it was the 1.8 DX engine with the straight forward outlet. Maybe where most of you live things were different, can't comment on that part. Also arount 82' the 1.6 used the same head design with the straight forward water outlet I believe. I have also found some cars that were "converted" to a GTi but only with badges and trim while the suspension and engine are still from the lesser models.

post a pic of the engine

as looking at the car from the from cylinder 1 is closest to the alternator if its a 1.6 the top hose flange will be bolted between 1 and 2 !!

ignore paul hes been on the coffee again

Yeah, ignore me. The problem is left is right and right is left, if you're at the front of the car but facing forwards looking backwards at it!
