1600 water out let comes out at an angle between cylinder 1 & 2.
1800 water outlet comes out straight between 3 & 4 I think.

not really, just bought it as a 1.6gti, it's registered as a 1.6gti
the water pipe with the temp sensor init come between the 3 & 4 so if you guys are correct it means i've got a 1.8 not a 1.6
:dontknow:
You have a 1.6 then. Cylinder 1 is on the right (of the car), ie nearest the chassis leg/wing; and lakesk8's guide is the wrong way round.

as looking at the car from the from cylinder 1 is closest to the alternator if its a 1.6 the top hose flange will be bolted between 1 and 2 !!

Yeah, ignore me. The problem is left is right and right is left, if you're at the front of the car but facing forwards looking backwards at it!

Check the engine number and look it up….The important parts of the engine number are the first two letters. Once you have this there are loads of VW sites that will tell you exactly what spec engine you have.
will clear it all up.
