Help CAR find the best hot hatch of all time

By Tim Pollard

06 January 2009 09:31

Two thousand and nine is going to be an epic year for hot hatches. We?ve got the new Ford Focus RS and VW Golf GTI Mk6 waiting in the wings, and Renaultsport won?t be far behind with its new hot Megane.

Help CAR Magazine name the definitive best hot hatch of all time in our new poll. We want the hundreds of thousands of users of CAR Online to have your say and vote for your favourite pocket rocket. We?ve had an argument in the office and come up with the following choices, but if we?ve missed one off, add your suggestion in the ?Other? box of the poll below and ? if there is a groundswell of opinion ? we?ll add your choices in to the poll.

Voting is live now, there?s only one vote per IP address and we?ll close the poll on 1 February 2009. Happy voting!

You could try…it depends if your firewall changes the IP address for different users! Or is that a load of rubbish? Probably. :dontknow:

Was forced to select "Other" because they didn't list the MG Maestro 1600

the turbo was the one to go for i did take a test drive in the turbo and i have to say it was very quick, but that about it.

Dont ask what your club can do for you, but what can you do for your club?

If only it were true! If the Golf hadn't been the 'first' hot hatch (technically it wasn't anyway) then someone else would have been it, the idea was with other manufacturers too and it would have been a couple months or years later and some other manufacturer would have claimed to be the "first hot hatch". But the Golf was the first which got the whole package more/less right, and popularised it all, so is widely credited for being the first hot hatch.

You could argue that cars like the Mini Cooper and Austin 1300GT lead the way for the GTI. Mass produced family vehicles given more powerful engines, sporty running gear and trim.

Looking at the survey looks like the SAAB owners club have discovered it and voted heavily for the 99 Turbo.

I think the Lancia is a bit too specalised to be included in the same list as the MK1 and 205 etc

Also looks like they've add the MK2 GTI to the bottom of the list?

1987 Alpine White 1.8 Clipper Cabriolet

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.
