It's the electric fuel pump - mounted just in front of the O/S rear wheel arch, a few people on here have noisy pumps.

It makes that buzz sound when the engine is turned off as well, does this mean it needs replacing?

Thanks for letting me know

When you first put your key in and turn it to ignition on, but not cranking it should buzz twice "prime" and then not run again until the engine is running.

If that makes sense?

That doesn't sound good if I'm being honest, It shouldn't be able to run without the key in because it's on a relay which if the ignition is off cuts the fuel, just incase of an accident.

Have you got a haynes manual, if so, I'd pull the fuel pump relay out of the fuse box and see what happens.

What car have you got btw mate, year, engine, tin top or cabrio etc?

Technically speaking, it shouldn't buzz at all. A good condition, properly working fuel pump, pumping clean fuel, is very quiet in operation.

Mines got a later fuse box in it (out of a 92') and I think it's different to yours cause it's got a third row for leccy windows and power hood or something so I can't help you with it's spefiic location!  :banghead:

Hope you get it sorted though, keep us updated.

Fuel pump relays are a pain, I have a couple laying about that I can send over to you if need be though. FOC :)

A buzz or a hum? I suppose it depends on how loud, etc. Maybe I'm just spoiled because I've always used either Bosch or Mercedes fuel pumps (yes the Merc fuel pump fits on a VW, with a little fettling).

Mine properly buzzes as in you can feel it kinda vibrate the car, but it runs fine.

I thought all the GTi fuel pumps were Bosch anyways? (I've never had to emvoe mine *touching wood*)

There's a good chance someone's bodged the cradle it sits in. There's rubber mounts to stop it making noise (by vibrating the local bodywork too) and transmitting to vibration to the rest of the car.

I have just disconnected the battery and that stoped it, but when I reconnected it, it didnt start buzzing until I turned the key then it continued. Something is strange as the car was flat this morning and after charging it back up the mfa went mad and then stoped working and since reconnecting and disconnecting just then it is now back on! I will check it out saturday, just hope that the alarm system on it has nothing to do with the fuel.

Thanks for the help everyone just hope it will be ok, whats the damage to replace the electric fuel pump if its knackered?

Still sounds to me like your relay if I'm being honest? Did you manage to figure out which one it was and disconnect that (you just pull them out).

The MFA always mess up when you battery dies, mine says all sorts of rubbish, it was 9:59am for a good week before I dissconnected my battery / re-connected the battery :P

Will update saturday with hopefully some good news!

The pump constantly running has probably just drained the battery, just disconnect the battery till you have a chance to look at it.

NB: the pump runs contantly with the engine so I very much doubt you've damaged it  :)

it pumps twice to prime the system.  if yours is constant could it be the fuel system isn't getting up to pressure?  ( i'm prob way off just speculating).  does sound like relay though.  ours is noisy too but the cradle is just about rotted off and the pump held up by cable ties as is the rear arb.  just another couple of things on my to do list.
