Why do you own a Mk1 Golf?

Simple question…. Why are we here?  Why own or be enthusiasts for the Mk1 Golf in any of it's forms?

GTI, cabriolet, Driver, diesel, 1.1, etc……

Is it the design, the nostalgia, the engine or handling…etc..etc?

reliability (mines 25 years old and still starts first time every time 8O )
handling
power to weight
the grin factor
I can now afford one !!!!!!
the way they still embarrass some modern "sports" cars
easy to maintain and fix yourself allowing you to learn
You don't have to plug it into a latop to put a light out or service it!?!?
Always wanted one as a kid

And of course the looks… my missus even likes them now!!  They grow on everyone.  I took an age poll on here the other day and the majority were 19 and 40+… but we had people complaining that we didn't start at 15!!!  It's brilliant how it can be viewed that greatly by people that young and people who probably owned them when they first appeared… can't say that about many other cars so I know I'm not alone

i always liked the golf's when i was young ( aged 10)  i remember going out and seeing loads of mk2 gti's parked up and loved them. always wanted a mk2 gti since then. and the more i grew up and leart my taste changed and wanted a small engined mk1 so i could modify. and when i came across a mk1 diesel in need of love when i was 20 i had to get her and revive her.  and as time has gone on i have fell deeper and deeper in love with them. now i am on golf mk1 2 and 3 a modified series 1 and a standard gti  i love them both so much

Spudfingers hit the nail on the head…

its the grin factor

the way a huge grin finds its way to each ear every time you open the garrage door an see it sitting there waiting to be driven

the way that youve still got that huge grin on your face when you get out knowing youve still got the journey home to look forward to

i just love these cars (maybe a little bit too much)

the grin factor is exactly why i have a mk1 golf :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

When I was a kid they sort of passed me by. A good mate had a intergalactic mileage mk2 gti and it kind of grew from there........rather a lot. :)

Why?

  • I suppose I just wanted a weekend cabby for the family and I'm into VW's….Can't afford a 1969 Karmann Beetle, so here I am.  Last VW convertibles I've had include VW Iltis (last year), VW Mk3 Cabby, VW Mk1 1984 GL Auto and 3 181's, including a US spec Thing.

  • Not too bothered about GTI's but I do appreciate them and the history…

  • I always like something a bit different (VW's wise!) so I like the fact that my cabby has steels and is in 'pure' design form for the Mk1. Very 'nostalgic'. Not many cabbys still on steels with steel arches.  It feels like the missing link between the air cooled models and the later more modern watercooled era of VW's.

  • I'm more into 'design' and 'history' of cars than the engines etc.

I guess I still would like air cooled again.  I'd like to own a K70 like my grandfather's old one he took me to school in, in the 70's.

it was my 1st car when i passed my test in 1991 a 1979 green 1500 gls with biscuit colour seats, all ma mates had mk2&mk3 escorts but i just liked the golfs styling 8) , kinda had them as commuters since and now have one for the sunny days and use a mk2 as a commuter

i just happened to come accross mine really,iv allways had mk2's GTI's drivers,gl's and never really got the mk1 (dare i say it?!) didnt quiet like them neither  8O BUT now iv grown up abit and now i own one i love em!! :y:
handles like a little beauty (kinda like my 1962 morris cooper but differnt league)

its kinda reliable, starter motors kaput so gettin lot of excercise pushing at half6 in the morning, petrol stations gotta have a keen eye for parking! oh and wheel bearings shot so feels like its gonna drop off these are just recent faults n hopefully get them sorted

allways liked to dub scene, shows, people and esp the cars the understated coolness and the fact hardly anyone has one makes u stand out abit from the drab rep cars and family busses

looking into putting a g60 in but now thinkin keep  "jess" standard as a run about n buy a corrado g60 instead!! :shhh:

only one fault……………..finding parts
