Very strange it looks like it has just been put resting in thin air (the door that is).

i want some of whatever he'd been taking!  

would have been so much better if the door went back.

but 10/10 for originality

interesting, and looks prety cool, but i would imagine there would be a fair bit of modification to the front wing for the sliding mechanism.

The sliding mechanism's in the door, there's just a hinged bit on the front pillar to swing it in towards the car to close it.

All that hassle for wheel chair access they must love their mk1.

It is not a modification by the current owner for any kind of improved access.

The sliding door mechanism was carried out as a feasibility study by VW on a 1974 prototype to save the space used by traditional slam doors.
