Re-spraying / painting the mk1 myself?

It is all in the Prep.  The better it looks the in the raw happier you will be during and after the paint.  Rattle matched can and clear coat, or spray with a compressor kit.  I have done both and well I do have a few years experience….

They make a flexible bondo for plastic bumpers that will not break off if bumped.  I don't know what you call it but I know for deep scratches it works well.  There are also rubber bumper welding kits if yours is torn that you can use from the back side to fill in.
