Well had my first welding effort today, and i must say it's not as easy as i thought, but i managed ok and i am pleased with the out come.

Driver inner wing after a bit of grinding!!!

as you can see there has been lots of patching before.

This is the repair peice, after alot of grinding to clean it up.

Then i welded it in, was having alot of trouble setting up the gas mig welder. i think it's because i was outside and something to do with the gas. bit of a nightmare really but….

it wasn't my finest work but in time i wanna replace this whole inner wing as the car has had a crash on the front driveside as there is some more repairs on the front.

anti rust primer!

Stone chip!

Not 100% happy with my first attempt at welding but i don't think it has come out to bad..

I wanna replace the inner wing next year as i'm thinking of taking the engine out and cleaning up the bay and engine, not sure tho.

i've got some thinking to do???? wanna make a good plan of action for her??

just a quick thanks to paul_c who advised me about welding!

let me know what you think??

done a bit of work over the past week just trying to sort some things out that were bugging me.

first things first needed to get some tunes in the car, i want to play the "Top 100 driving athems"

picked up some jbl (just bloody loud)6x4 speakers of ebay at a good price

fitted them in the rear where the standard speakers went

then also picked up some door pockets off ebay and did the same

just the job fully fitted and lucky all the wire were already there for the speakers

then the head unit also picked up of ebay works a treat

also i found this when i was fitting the rear speakers which needs to be sorted out quick as i have my MOT on the 17th dec

just need to have another look at it as the stereo losses it's memory.

still not sorted out my temp gauge issue think i must have the wrong sender, which one should i have for a 1.6 gti bloke at gsf says there are 3 different one listed.

got its mot soon so i'm just cheaking that everything is ok and making a to do list

1. sort out rear seat belt mount
2. revease lights don't work
3. 4 new tyres

thats it so far but i'm sure it will get longer.

not done much on this for a few weeks, have played about trying to get the horn working for the MOT was a crap wire at the fuse box.  :D  :D

but now the fuel gauge has stopped working!!! :(  :banghead:

Had 4 new tyres Falken 185/60/r13 which have stop it from slipin and sliding about. It's like a train on rails now brilliant to drive.

i thought everthing ws going so well until this 8O  8O

not sure what to do?

can this be fixed by me? or will in need a professional

anyone with advise on this?

some good work there!

but…  8O  :? what happened to the floor? if I were you, I'd clean it all up to get a better look

going by that though and the area it's in, it'll be as easy to repair as the inner wing   even though I can't really tell from the pics if the box section that runs along the floor is effected at the front end of it, it's just a simple box section

First thing to do would be a really good clean up, using a wire brush on a grinder. Also, you could try brake/clutch cleaning fluid, sprayed on by a degreaser gun (uses compressed air), to soften the underseal, then scraping with a chisel or screwdriver. Its awkward stuff to get off but it will need to come off.

It looks like the jack section has rotted out, you need to remove seats and carpets and look at the other side of the floor section too.

It is fixable at home, its the stripping and prepping which will take ages on a large panel such as the floor.

cheers for the reply.

inside the car the foot wells have have a plate welding in and you can see this from the underside of the car.

when i bought the car the footwell were wet so i wonder if this plate had trapped water and created this problem.

ill jack it up as high as i can get it on friday and have a look about.

i just going to sort it!! no messing about

ill post some more pic's when i've cleaned it up!!!

anymore advise????

Take some time (like, a day if needs be) to get it as high as possible, you'll thank yourself in the long run. When you're welding, the more comfortable a position you can get in, the easier it is and thus the better quality the weld is. I'd be looking at getting some large axle stands under the wishbone inner mount area.
