Mk1 1.6 Gti Project Rot Box!!! BAD NEWS!!

Hello everyone,
At long last i have bought a Mk1.
It's a runner with an MOT till feb
Needs some work but i would like to see a Mk1 that doesn't.

1st problem is that it won't start once the engine is hot so i've had a look around and narrowed it down to the Injectors/Thermo time switch but i'll have a good look at the weekend.

Gonna give it good clean and go over it to see what needs doing.

Think i'll be spending alot of time on here as i am a bit of a beginner, so all help welcome.

Small update!!!!!!!

Been playing with the car all weekend trying to figure some things out.

1. For some reason the temp gauge wasn't working but after further investigation it was working fine.
The engine just wasn't getting hot!!!!
So went to work on the water pump and it turns out that there wasn't a thermo stat in the water pump!!!
no sure why this was but i stuck a new one in and now it works fine and the engine is allowed to get hot!!!

2. My car will not start once hot. So i went about checking some stuff.

Cold start valve works fine, spary is good, no drips, only comes only when it's cold

Thermo time switch works fine, comes on when it cold for around 3-5 secs then switchs off. Doesn't come on when the engine is hot.

Control pressure regulator has 12volts at the plug adn has got 20.6 ohms running through the heater element terminals.

Injectors????

When the engine was warm pulled out the 1st injector blocked the hole up and nothing came out at the start. After alot of cracking the injector squirted and the engine started up.
2nd injector fine
3rd injector spray was a bit off centre
4th injector spary seemed a little weak and off centre

So that as far i have got!!!! Still a bit puzzled about this hot start thing!!!!

Can anyone help i have search the forums and it is still not clear.

Does this sound like i haven't got enough pressure in the system when it is hot???????

thanks

Hi quite new to but had the exact same problem, it turned out to be mainly the starter bearings were knackered when cold it would start but once warm all too loose.

Things really improved once I fitted new radiator or you could flush out, chances are it will be very very brown and sludgy.
Also needed new water pump, whilst their chucked on new cam belt.

Another thing is how hot does your car get before fan comes on my one was cooking so for cheapness I fitted manual switch!

Winter arrived and a new battery was needed for good measure well worth it!

I am on a very tight budget but this was all needed.

Maybe just the starter if you are lucky!

Have you checked the non-return valve on the fuel pump?

Also, can you hear the fuel system prime, either when it's hot or cold?

cheers for the reply rich.

i haven't cheaked the non return valve on the fuel pump not sure how to really  :dontknow:

Any advice?????

I can hear the fuel system prime.

Is that to do with the flashing light on the temp gauge?

My fuel pump was my next port of call, but need a bit of help with it!!

thanks

The only way to check the non-return valve really is swap in another and see if it makes any difference.

The priming isn't to do with the flashing light on the dash - that's part of the coolant system - but it does flash at the same time (i.e. when you first turn the key).

If you can hear the pump priming, and the engine starts and runs when it's cold, then it's unlikely to be the fuel pump that's causing the problem.

Have you done a complete test of the injectors? If not, try this link.

This page is a very useful guide to K-jet in general

i have tested the injectors one at a time but not together.

i'll do this at the weekend or when i get sometime.

could it be the accumulator???

i really wanna do fuel pressure test like crazy told me on the phone, but ?90 for a test kit.

Really ain't sure what to do!!!!!! My brain has turned to mush!!!!

i've spent the last 2 nights reading stuff about it, not sure were to turn.

Something i have notice tonight as well is that the air inlet hose that comes from the under the rad to the air filter/air sensor is broke in half, not sure if this could affect things.

if i took the plunge and got one of ther pressure test kits.

will that tell me whats wrong

how do i know what the pressures should be and is there any instruction anywhere on how to test things.

i'm a bit of a beginner so need help really

thanks for all the help

Thinks i've sorted my hot start problem!!!!!!!!!!!! :D  :D  :D  :D

Spoke to crazy earlyer in the week about things and he said:

"get a pressure testing kit on it"

"buy this books and it will tell you everything you need to know, how to tune & modify bosch fuel injection"

so using his very sound advise i found the book and bought it, thought i'd have a good read of it this weekend and buy the gauge next week after i've had a read of things. so i can sort this problem out

it arrived this morning and i had a good read.

had a quick play witht the air sensor and the metering head, took it to bits, cleaned it and put it back together.

the problem has now gone or so i think it has, i might have spoken to soon but i have made progress .

This is my first dealings with crazyquiff and i'm well happy with them, i will defo use them again think he should charge for his advise. TOP BLOKE

The book was called "How to tune & modify bosch fuel injection" by Ben Watson.

It's really good book tells you everything you need to know about your k-jet system.

only ?16, money well spent.
