Fuel Consumption

Whats the best fuel consumption anybody has got out of a 1.8 8v GTI?  Went on a 190mile round trip from Chesterfield to Northampton and back at a steady 65mph and after sitting down to work it out when I got home, nearly fell off my chair when it came out at 40.3MPG!!!

Well chuffed - just shows you dont need to spend thousands on a new "green engined" car!!!

I filled up for ?49.95 the other day at about 112p a litre and did 289miles (lots of toe down on the M1 though!)

That's just over 25mpg - that's after a new engine and gearbox too - not happy about it to be honest - I was gonna post a topic about it

Well to be honest it's probably the toe down on the M1 that did it.  I'm always about 30-32 mpg overall, but if you really thrash it you will get the down into the mid teens.  I know when I first got the car years ago I did a tank in a night and averaged 17mpg…

I don't think I have ever got more than 250 miles out of a full tank since I bought it!

I always thought it was about right but people I've spoken seem to think it should be more 30-35 - seems a bit unrealistic to me though!

im lucky to get 200miles from a tank….

isnt the original book figure at 23 and 27mpg for town and runs - or have i made that up?

I think 250 miles per tank is about 30mpg from memory - I can't remember exactly what the fuel tank capacity is but that's the ballpark.

23 mpg and you may seriously have a fuel leak.  I had a rubber between the filler and the fuel tank  perish and only noticed one day after I dropped my keys a faint drop.  One drop every few seconds may not leave a puddle on the drive but would certainly kill the mpg.

Regularly getting 36 - 38 from the GTI Cabby, and that's hitting the loud pedal quite a bit, all sorts of roads and distances, and I know it's running rich.
The Clipper automatic did do 34 - 36 (driving carefully), but seems to have dropped to 32 to 34 for some reason, plugs are perfect and it pulls like a rocket, only thing changed was the tyres !!!!

Owning a Mk1 cabby is a vertical learning curve…

Yeah but remember Cabrio tanks are a bit bigger than on the tin tops, so 250 miles out of a cabby isn't quite as good, though I suppose they are a lot heavier too…

next challenge is to see how much I can get out of a tank normally.  Usually drive it 60 - 70 mile a day - about half of it sat on the A38 at around 80-85 with me and 2 work mates in it.  See if I can make 200 miles!!

Does anybody know the official figures for a combined cycle, and range?

When I bought my cabby last year it used to cost me ?43 to fill up (I let it click twice) when petrol peaked a few weeks ago i got ?55 in.

It was @ tesco - 112p when I filled it up from deep in the red - because I had a new downpipe due to a holeand wanted to see if my MPG was improved.

It's always took that much, am I an oddity..?

maybe cabbys have a different tanks to tin tops then?

Also whilst we are on the subject - where exactly on the guage is empty? anybody ran out and found the hard way?  I ask because my guage rests below the end of the red section when engine is off - by about 2-3 needles width, but when I brim it it sits just a little over 3/4 - so is my guage out, or is empty really the end of the red bit?

When I bought the car it had no petrol in at all, it got me up the road and then died (this was just above where it stays when switched off) also the battery had died - so my first trip home was with the AA :D

Started as I meant to go on..

…some aproimate figures to consider…

Kerb (unladen) weights (aprox):
Hatchback   800 - 840 kg
GTI Cabriolet   966 kg
Clipper   976 kg

Fuel tanks:
Hatchback - 10 gals (50 litre)
Cabriolet - 12 gals (60 litre)

…and don't forget the extra wind resistance of the Cabby, especially with the roof down…….

I had a K plate cabby (non GTi) which i used to get 330-360 out of a full tank week in week out, but  I was doing a 40 minutes to and from work. Man i used to love that drive, the car never missed a beat.

So much so i recently bought a nice littel Rivage, I havent driven this one as much to see yet. but I fileld the tank up in Essex and drove all teh way back home (about 210) miles and had just over a quarter of a tank.

Although this may not be accuarate as just the other day i have discovered a slight fuel leak.

Obviously a lot of it is down to the type of journey you are doing (long or short, up loads of hills, stuck i traffic etc), how you drive (do you have a heavy right foot) and condition of your motor.
