Mk1 Driver project VNT TURBO DIESEL

I bought this little baby a few months ago, 300 notes and a box of brand new coilovers in the boot.

Original sellers photos, grille dissappeared when I went to collect it - as did the original seats

she has been sat in the drive whilst I clear the deck of a few other projects.

Now I've shifted a couple of old projects on and cleared some space I'll be working on the Golf - me myself and I, outside in the rain on the drive with a single garage as the workshop. Most of the work will be done at night when the missus and bairns are in bed. I normally do about 4-5 hours sleep a night, sure it messes me up but needs must when you've a dubaddiction.

Anyway I've had 2 weeks off and inbetween babysitting, decking, landscaping and digging footings for the foundation - I've snuck in some extra hours of Golfism….

Engine bay stripped and 15 years of gunk removed, clutch hole has been butchered, and scuttle ain't too clever - would like to remove it but don't know what to do with heater fan.

Interior stripped, doors are perfect - as is floor

Boot has had some attention  - how do you get those carboard and thin plastic trims off without damage as they are perfect

Battery tray may get the chop too….

All in, pretty sound, very small issue of rear arch rot on one side, clutch/bulkhead issues but otherwise a very original unmolested, cared for  golf

She'll be kept fairly original except for the tuned 1.9 TD lump and 5 speed box.

Rolled me over!

Finally got a few spare hours to roll my golf and clean and inspect the underside.

The mark 2 versions of my frames worked really well - easy to use on my own.

No holes on the underside, just a small area with minor rust spots near the rear axle mount - yah!

No to treat the rust and re-coat. was thinking black shutz as the final finish but it looks like white would be correct? IS that right?

Also there are a number of factory holes on the underside, should these be blanked with blind grommets and sealed or left open?

Nice to see your getting stuck into your Golf, can remember you from years back when I had a KLX & you always use to reply to mine and anybody elses post when they had a problem. Do you still find time for the bikes or has the Golf replaced them?

Finally sold the ultimate KLX a few months back, the new owner has had nothing but problems. He was a biking newbie and never used a kickstart in his life - I tried to persuade him not to buy it. But he did and he's screwed it up and is now gonna break it. Tragic loss, would buy it back if I had not spent the money on the VFR I've wanted for years.

how about a thread on how you made the car swivel???

should be one on here..http://www.vwgolfmk1.o…ewtopic&t=9810&highlight=..did construction drawings as well, they are for a caddy but only the rear frame differs slightly.

That frame looks great - I was going to go and measure my shell to knock one up myself, but you've saved me the trouble :y:

Last FridayI had the day off so I got out the big wire brush, Mr grinder, Mr drill and the stripping disc, ripped off any rust spots back to good metal - thankfully no holes
Treated it all with coo-var rust convertor which seems like excellent stuff.

Then a slop of zinc paint.

Itching to play on the weekend but no free pass from the boss

Managed to rush home early today as I knew I had 1 hour before the missus and the kids got home……

Managed to get two litres of shutz through the gun before she got home. all cleaned up and back down on the floor like nothing had happened. Hurrah :D
However when she arrived home it wasn't hard for her to guess with the stench of thinners hanging in the air that I hadn't been doing the housework- Busted.

What box section did you use for the Mk2 version of your frames? Looking at your caddy thread where you made the first ones, they look a lot thicker.

Thanks

sorry for not replying, been busy with lot's of other stuff - unfortunately very little has happened to the golf.

Stands are 40mm box, original caddy ones were 50mm - well spotted!

These ones work much better as I did the calcs for the radius section properly - to get a much better curve.

The frames will hopefully be up for sale soon when the golf's back on it's wheels……… just as soon as I've built a huge shed, knocked two garages into one, built the kitchen extension, shifted 7 tonnes of topsoil, laid the path, fitted new drains, fitted new central heating boiler etc etc etc  :banghead:  :banghead:  :banghead:  :banghead:

Happy to see you have another mk1,remember you being gutted when the caddy had to go. What you planning to do to the AAZ to get 150 ponies out of it?
Nice work so far keep it up.

Can't be without a dub on the drive - well two at the mo!

The AAZ is in my daily mk3 at the mo. It'll get tarted up with new head gasket and ARP studs then re-worked pump with TDI internals, probably a VNT turbo, 2.5" downpipe and an intercooler

though I may ditch the AAZ and go for a mTDI
