First mk1!

Hi everyone, i've been looking about on here and this is obviously a great place to get information and have a good chat. I'm a poor student from Edinburgh and have just bought my first mk1 which I already love even though I got it today. I've always wanted to work on a mk1, had a check over and needs a bit of love. Its going to be a slow budget resto. Got plans to make some custom parts. Funtimes ahead!

Its a 1982 5 door GL in gold/'dvla beige' with a bit of rust detailing. It has the brown and beige interior which is my absolute favourite.

Also own a mk2 8v gti and before that a mk3 8v which weighed about 3 ton. And I am not proud of my citroen zx past. VAG!

I've picked up that everyone likes pictures as do I, so i will get some as soon as poss.

Yeah Danny its hard to balance restoring a car and studying. Going to be a very budget resto indeed. I'm sure i seen a thread by you about finances and restoring a golf. going to have to be careful. And I've never played hockey, so there must be another Fagan going about.

A5OPY, a regional meet would be great, although its going to not be until March…ish until its fully on the road.

Oh Yeah I would be grateful if someone colud clear this up for me. My GL is a 1500 but, I've been reading and you can apparently get a 1457 or a 1471, how do you know the difference AND does it even matter? eg. for replacing a carb. My V5 sais '1500'.

Alright carnie, thats a very very tempting offer! I currently have it in the Borders because in down here until end of september, have a garage and drive here, but the garage isnt good for working in. Can you give me the details of the place and price. Would be good to have another opinion and dub banter! Also I have no tools, bar a mechanics kit, however at my college i have access to an amazing metal workshop with sand blasters, plasma cutters, everything. Can even cast aluminium. So planning custom stuff, roof rack. crazy quiff charges ?230, i think, not polished, so making one would save ?230 and loose me a few hours. can't wait! Cheers

Make your own roof rack wow haha, pretty cool.Your college sounds ace i think you could do me a few custom parts too!,i just left college, was doing spray painting and panel beating.Solid to get an apprenticeship though.Yeah its Safe store down leith,i think its ?67 if your a student, basically its a massive warehouse, people leave there cars when they go on holiday etc,one guys got his boat there!Ive just got a space with the golf on stands and the engine next to it.You can use the elec, water and its got lighting and security, only crap thing is that it shuts at 6 which i didnt find out till i got the car there,so basically thur till 8 and sat till 6 and sun till 4.Just means you gotta work quick.Plenty of space though.Yeah ive got plenty of tools and stuff, dunno where its all gonna go when im done, nowhere to store it all.Dunno im hoping ill be outta there fairly soonish, just got the flywheel and clutch so once that fitted i can get the engine in etc.
