Hi mate, i've got a gx too, the weber conversion is worth doing, its a much easier carb to work on and far less complicated than the stock carb. not sure on the cam though. Tom

not much.. im guessing about the same as the driver.. 60bhp when new..
on the basis its not 20+ years old.. you'll be lucky to have 50.. tbh
but a weber will put about 10-15 on it did for me

nah 1.3 mate.. book says 63 bhp standard.. if yours is 1.5 then maybe a little more 75 standard..
but thatll mean youve still only got about 50-55 now

the ron rating on the spec sheet is 2 star (91RON) 70 BHP. nowadays unleaded is (95RON) or super (98RON) will that mean that the car might have more power now with higher RON rating ???????

i...
i dont know if worth doing to be honest. my gx has a weber carb on it and its fine, but thats it. im a firm believer in if you want a fast car, buy a fast car. when i got the car it was on there and i dont think i'll bother changing it back but i'd rather it wasn't on there. it cant make it that much faster and surely isn't making it more economical in these testing times. maybe im just a grumpy tight 19yr old… i'd be very interested to know what you do and how you get on though. ah and one other thing is they make the car smell alot more fuel'y. i thought i had a leak.

agree with you totally tiddles.
Got a weber on my GL, smells more fuelly as pointed out by a friend when i overtook them, is a really poor design actually (make sure you WD40 the spline on the throttle spring or it can stick) and there was no performance gain. Oh how i wish the pierburg still worked. Meh………had to do it though

To clarify: the Golf GX came from the factory with a 70bhp engine and a Pieburg carb. Now, these carbs are notorious for wearing out gradually and this reduces performance and introduces starting and running issues. The Weber carb is a simpler design and is widely available as an alternative replacement. It might add a tiny bit more bhp over stock, for example if it were tuned to run rich on full throttle, or the jets changed, etc but with the intended jets fitted and tuned properly, it would also result in 70bhp.
So its possible that a GX with a worn Pieburg develops 60bhp and replacing with a new Weber (and tuned properly) develops 70bhp or maybe a little more.
