MOT question - oh no not anover one
Right chaps, please answer on topic
i know project hof is a 5 door, but i have no intention on ever using the rear seats, firstly because I'm too tall for anyone to sit behind me and secondly i dont want to..
so question i ahev for you MOT testers out there
Should a car manufactured in 1981 have rear seat belts fitted if rear seats in place
If rear seats are not fitted, all holes for seatbelts welded up, seat brackets removed etc etc etc
Will it still pass an MOT?
From my limited understanding i was led to beleive that if they are there they must operate/work/function correctly, but if no seats nor belts fitted then not req'd
thanks chaps

if memory serves me correctly seat belts are mandatory in the rear of a vehicle after 1st April 1986 but if seats or seat belts are not fitted they can not be tested and an advisory should be issued!
been about 18 months since i was testing
hope it helps though

Lawsy, on my old red golf, i had no rear seats when i put it through an mot, it had no rear seat belts. i think(depending on where you go and how well yopu know the mot inspector) that if it ain't there they can't fail it as long as its not important to the car mate. hope that helps. Tom

The area concerned could be 30cm or less from the suspension, which means its within the area tested. The 30cm is an arbritary dimension, sometimes a rusty area or panel can be further than 30cm and still be critically important, while other metalwork is technically within the 30cm but is not structural. It all depends on the interpretation of the tester, they tend to have a good idea of what's important or not (after all, they see loads of cars day in day out and almost all are monocoque construction) but they'd tend to be sensible.

when i put my golf through MOT last i had my back seats in without no belts…..
like you said they do test them.. but its an advisory..
but im quite sure if the back is fully stripped of belts and seats then it has to pass…. and can only be an advisory again not a failure…

thats in referall to the hole that i have in my mk1 which i know is an MOT faliure
Which has nothing to do with the original question I am asking about if rear seat belts are a MOT requirement on a 1981 car with no rear seats????

If no seats and no seat belts then surely its classed as a van with side windows??? aaaggghhh why cant anything be simple

not 100% sure but think its pre c plate compulsory for rear belts. but your tester knows this.

Rear seatbelts had to be fitted to new cars from 1987. If there is any proof of rear belts fitted to any car then it is testable. Just make sure you remove all bolt on parts, wouldn't worry about welding up the holes.
I've put a 2 seater golf through an mot like this with no problem and that was in a 1988 car. Tester called the ministry to check regs and was told as long as there is no evidence then they cant test it.

between you me and the goalpost.
my rear belts in my cabby don't work as they should
so i asked my mot man "will it pass if i take out the rear belts?" and he said
"i shouldn't really be telling you this but, if i remove both belts and the whole rear seat we can't fail it"
hope this helps.
but, when me and some friends started oout building trikes we took them to differant mot places and each one told us something differant.
some said we needed seatbelts others say we need hazard lights, outhes said we diddn't.
so it's worth asking your mot man first then try another if he gives you the wrong answer.

fair enough, but seats are out now and so are all traces of belts, so its now a 2 seater , but with 5 doors.. lol
cant see how they can fail for not having rear seat belts if its got no seats

If a trike's based upon a car, it needs to comply with car regs. If it started out as a motorbike, then it needs to comply with motorbike regs. That's my understanding of things (based on an episode of Scrapheap challenge).

wrong!
trikes all have the same mot.
the differance is that the regulations change so much in a short period of time, and the testers only get retrained every 3 years.
so if you get an mot tester who trained 2 years ago his mot will be a lot more leanient than someone who done his training last week.
and as for seatbelts, if you sit astride it (i.e. frame between your legs) you do not need a belt.
if you sit on it (i.e. in a seat) you do.
but you can use a car engine and build the frame to come between your legs and have no seat belt.
any more questions just ask
if you sit on it yu do

but doesnt a lot of it come down to age, my friends old 53 beetle didnt have any seatbels and still doesnt need them because they werent fitted at the time
if rear seat belts became legislation in 1986 then i thin its cased closed as my 82 golf is old enough not to have them
anyone agree?
