mk1 Polo 1.6 16v + s1 1.6 gti

stripped the interior out to inspect the floor and its all pretty sweet, took the door card off on the passenger rear qtr and the rust damage is too bad on the inside, so i think I'm just going to get that portion cut out and plated for now, same goes for the rear panel, there was a previous section by the passenger light on the inner side that had been plated but again its gone rusty there, i may be able to clean it up, por15 it and top coat it, ill do the leading edge of the boot too as its got some surface rust.

the biggest job but still an easy one for a decent weler will be replacing the filler neck surround but its single skinned there so its all good a need a repair panel from the muppet can live on in this one =D while that sides getting welded ill have popped the rear window out to clean up and have the bit of surface rust painted or welded if its rotton further under the seal.

anyway hoovered out the car, carpets are mint everywhere bar the drivers side doh! ill eventually get round to replacing it, rock it for as long as poss then go for some netwon commercial plush carpets mmmmmmm

fitted the corbeaus in with the std claspless belts, not going to put the harnesses in this one i dont think as the claspless ones are well cool. need to grab the recaro bases and golf mk2 subframes i have and go see jase to see if he can weld them up.

oh and upon opening the inspection plate i found these two, grim and grimmer.

saturday

Woke up at 12 and met Jimsiss and his mate at the unit at 1.

sorted out james a megasquirt (an ecu not a shady spunkface in the corner) and then proceed to whip off the exhaust system and inlet manifold off the golf, ready for a 4 branch and magnex stainless steel system that would be arriving with the new mk1 golf.

That was a fucking mission and a half and in the end i ended up making it meet mr angle grinder.

the mk1 golf was collected at 3 =O lazy bastards i thought they were gonna get it at 10 grrrrrrrrr so it came to me at 7.

got the 4 branch on (eventually, one bolt was being a reet can't), inlet manifold unfortunatly when i took it off the inlet manifold gasket was goosed and i had no spare, or any hermatite! ghey, bodged anyway. rest of the exhaust system fitted, the middle section was easy, and all the rubbers went on a treat after some kettle action, but the rear was a twat as its a golf and its over teh axle! gheyors.

after fucking about for time i just did some rather precarious uber jacking and it was one, hurrah.

good to go then to the gangsters ball hurrah, pack everything up, lock everythign way, put shit in the car, get changed, get in the car, start her up. wont idle and tappety like a mother nice person when revving. grrrrrrrrr beruity inlet manifold gasket =[

my phone battery ran out at like 7 o clock so fitted the 4 branch, inlet manifold, exhaust, anti roll bar was all done in near enough darkness under the car so it took me aaaages grrr, probably why i missed the fact the gasket was so fooked.

so thought fuck it if i cant get to d-towns then I'm not sleeping over night at the unit cos i cant phone anyone for help, so ill try and get back home, hoping i didnt break down on one of the country lanes! finally got in at ten to 1.

baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaastards. one a plus note the exhaust looks the bollocks and sounds sweet.

hope gsfs open tomorrow or i have an inlet manifold gasket in the house.

gayors

sunday

went to the unit and got an inlet manifold off a spare dx engine in the unit, car will idle fine now, but still tapping on idle and acceleration. going to retard? the engine a bit to see if i can stop the pinking (if it is that) otherwise i may have to suspect that the tappets need replacing, or are being starved of oil?

so the impending plans are the following, probably this weekend

new oil pump
new cambelt
new cambelt tensioner

and still need a replacement windscreen (anyone?)

got pictures of the grot spots, sent them to a few friends to see if they can help out asap. if your a mobile welder and fancy a go gimme a shout =]

and piccies of the exhaust fitted. i could have shut the door haha

Well its been an interesting week to say the least.

Thursday Hoppy came down to the unit and we began to sift through the spares we amassed from the project acquastion. Then come eleven o clock at night after both being throughly shattered, rich was insistant that we sorted out my exhaust manifold, as it was blowing. This turned out to be an epic mission and we were at it till 1 int morning. The cause of my incessant ticking?! an exhaust manifold gasket on the wrong way round, i had fitted it incorrectly when i fitted the 4 branch and exhaust last weekend but considering my phone ran out of battery and i was working with no light, the fact i actually managed to fit a 4 branch and exhaust is a wonder in itself haha =D

We also fitted my lorbers and sorted the fuel guage out, as the car has been sat for some time the float has siezed in position. Sorted with a bit of wd40!

So come friday, the mission was work in the morning, then off to hyde road tyres to have the wheels tracked, and off to an exhaust place to have a c clamp put on the exhaust, one rubber an it alinging properly, after enquiring at hyde road tyres about a decent exhaust place, a mechanic offered to do it for me, and for a tenner he disassembled the exhaust, putteyed all the joins, put 2 new c clamps on and the new rubber. happy days

After that i went over to GSF to pick up some goodies

Gearbox Oil
Gearbox Shift Repair Kit
Timing Belt
Timing Belt Tensioner
Oil Pump
G12 Coolant
Injector Seals

So off to Derby I went, got to the unit to see Karl & Yeti man.

Fitted the Injector Seals & Cleaned up the injectors, should have checked the spray pattern really but ill get round to it when i get some jars to measure the fuel volume to ensure its within specification.

Dropped part of the coolant to top it with G12, i say part of the coolant, because i was too baked and forgot about dropping the thermostate to get rid of the other 3 litres of water hahaha! doh job for another day then, but at least theres some fresh g12 in there anyhoo

and that ensued the days missions to a close.

Saturday we met up with Schneil & Rach to go to the unit and fit a new bootlid on neils GT. I decided it would be a perfect time to fit my missing linkz short shit kit off the deceased muppet along with the gsf shifter rebuild kit. Did the front half rebuild, leaving the gearstick side till the sunday. Didnt manage to get the gearbox oil done as the pikey'd tool for the job got merked under my hands of steel hahaha.

not to worry thats a job for this week, as ive got the proper gearbox drain tool from GSF a while back when i dropped teh oil  on beena.

anyway some piccies from the first wash and semi arsed wax after 750 miles of driving. Came up well, better than i thought it would be. There are obivioulsy a few points on attenion rust wise, underneath thte car is remarkably solid, i made a point of poking aroun everywhere when it was up on the ramps, the rear beam mounting points are perfect, the jacking points could do with more underseal as some looks like its chipped off recently and i think the passengers inner sill section requires a small patch. the front valance where the chin splitter fits on the passanger side has rotted under the trailing edge which is also where the bottom 10mm self tapped holds the bottom of the wing in place. should be too difficult a job to replace and teh rest of the front panel is solid.

Im happy enough with it anyway, its never going to be a show car, and thats not what i want either, i just wanted a sweet daily, and i do love my mk1 gtis.

anyway some piccies

Phew! Just a bit then! hahahaha

Picked up a new engine off a friend, we both assumed it was a 1.6 GTI EG block, but upon stripping it down, I came across a few concerns. First off, is that it is actually an FP lump, which was a 1.6 Carb engine fitted to 75-77 golfs, so proper early beasts. The Head cannot be used with the GTI injection setup as its for a carb, it has no injector holes.

The main reason I picked up the engine was because my own EG gti head is due a rebuild as the tappets are noisy and I suspect the valve stem seals need replacing as a matter of course. However as I now cannot use the rebuilt head, I will have to purchase another.

That leaves me at a quandry. Does anyone know the Bore stroke and compression ratio of the FP block. Will an EG 1.6 GTI head fit on the 1.6 FP block, and still produce the same power of around 113bhp. If I cannot use the block, can I at least use the pistons in an EG block.

So the rebuilt LS 1.6 head is for sale, and the bottom end complete with brand new pistons may well be if i cannot use it for my own application.

Freshly rebuilt Head

Brand New Pistons, you can still see the part number stamped on the top

Random pic of the car

Taino & Jamesface picked up my new interior for me from cheltenham and me and chazbot embarked on an epic journey on saturday night to collect it from evesham, fuelled by pot, the worlds best fish and chip supper, ridiculous amounts of munchies, mad mooney mobster and some rude tunes, we were set! Got back early sunday morning, had a dope sleep and fitted the interior the next day.

Me and Karlie had a productive day on saturday.

Fitted the Front Coilies and changed the discs and pads for some black diamond x drilled and pagids to make stopping less trouser explosive.

Snapped a camber eccentric top bolt grrr but found a suitable temporary replacement.

While i was fitting the front coilies and brakes, karlos set about sorting out a few loose ends here and there, sorting out a broken white clip on the passenger seat to stop it rocking, reattached my front splitter, straighted the gti badge and fixed the wing properly into place.

sunday, i washed and polished the car and re-adjusted the bonnet so it sits proper flush.

got nufty stuff done on zee loonamon too, was a productive weekend.

nice one hopstar - ive got a few too.

Well hopwana came up to visit in the cadster on tuesday (i think) haha was good to catch up wi him.

was an interesting day down the unit shall we say! got the fan belt off, loosened the intermediate pulley and water pump pulley bolts fannied about getting the lower timing cover off, got the tensioner off, fitted a new one which was desperatly needed as the old one was rubbing against the belt =[

aaaaaaaaaaanyway, went to fit my new cambelt, and its only the wrong it, its about 1 1/2 times the width and same for length, so i had to reuse my old belt! grrr, oh well cest la vie, new one is ordered from vw by rachy so shes a star!

anyway some pics from the evening

so on to saturday, i had grand visions of fitting my new 4 branch and new exhaust studs but i put the plans on hold, mainly because i overslept till 5 hahaha but also because i couldnt be arsed with it going wrong and if im getting the exhaust and inlet manifold off i might as well change the headgasket while im at it, turns out i think its due as ive noticed a bit of sludge collecting on my expansion cap =[ ive got a new headgasket and ill get the cambelt next weekend, so i think its definatly a job for the bank holiday weekend! All i need to get a some new head bolts and im set. oh forgot to add i got a new water pump. I would like to use the block ive got with brand new pistons but using the original bottom end and gearbox means less faffing about as i need it to be ready for reliable daily driving by the end of the weekend

So onto saturdays stuff i did do.

my drivers rear coilie is set too low and is scrubbing on most bumps, all the others are fine on any road surfaces bar mchoosive potholes but even standard cars aint safe on them.

passenger arch rear

drivers arch rear

unfortunatly my coilies seem to be a bit siezed grr and i didnt want to put any proper stress on it for fear of snapping an adjusting ring, the c spanner or merking my hands on some delightful inner arch! so i left that as a job for sunday and fitted my locking wheel bolts that id finally got out of the crashbot.

saturday night we were meant to go to a rave in worsley but as the only person who hadnt drank i was the designated driver although we were going nowhere with 3 up and that arch gap so we didnt botther in the end =[

so sunday it was fooooooookin baking and try as id like i couldnt sleep past midday cos the sun was beaming in so i set off to halfords to get some plusgas to unsieze the coilies although i completly forgot about it when i was there and came out with hermatite blue and silcion copper gasket sealent, autoglym polishing kit, clay bar kit and a machine polisher. ffs!!!

so after a burger king flex, i set out getting all 3.5 mighty raging horses in motion to help me cut my grass which was like a wee mini jungle! and set about cleaning, claybarring and polishing the car, which didnt come out too bad, the only problem is it makes you spot all the other imperfections more =[ paint imperfections i dont care about really but noticing bodged repairs and other things make me grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! i may have to offer defeat and buy a temporary daily while i do some bits and pieces on here, or at least get teh hole welded up haha! just finding time is a bastard working all week, if i could weld i would have done it as the first thing when i got her… meeshka!

anyway some piccies =]

you can see the oil patchs that have been left from a leaky oil filter housing and oil cooler take off jobbie, i took it apart cleaned it up and used a silicion copper gasket stuff on it, so tomorrow is the acid test to see if its done the job!

and two karile took just as we'd finished fitting the coilies

Well,

Its been an interesting month for charlie murphy!

At the tail-end of april I noticed a fair bit of gunk appearing in the header tank so either a full coolant flush was due or the headgasket!

First on my list before tackling the headgasket was to fit a new timing belt and tensioner, stripped the existing cambelt only to find GSF supplied me the wrong belt, they gave me a diesel one, 1 1/2 times as long and as fat, so that was a no-go! new tensioner fitted and old belt went back on!

So slightly miffed, i text my mate Rachel who works at Derby VW who got me a genuine VW cambelt, which i should have done in the first place!

So come the weekend, my new cambelt had arrived so I travelled down to pick it up and to embark on the mission of doing the headgasket. I decided to do it on a bank holiday weekend to give me lots of time to do everything properly, clean and paint a few things and if any eventualaties came about, time to sort them as everything had to done and dusted come the monday ready for work.

So over the three days i did the following

New VW Oil Pump
Painted Water Pump
Painted Rocker Cover
Painted Inlet Manifold
Painted Throttle Body
New Thermostat
New Thermostat Housing
Coolant Flush & Change
New VW Cambelt
New Exhaust Manifold Studs /Nuts/Washers
New Rocker Cover Bolts & Washers
15w40 Oil Change + Filter
New Bosch Starter Motor
Headgasket

Got everything back together and got the old girl fired up, only to find the water flange at the side of the head leaking! arghhhhhhh! It was due to my laziness of not cleaning up the gasket face impeccably, so took it apart, cleaned it up only to find that my new gasket id put on there had already given up the ghost ARghhhhhh! sorted with some hylomar, my new best friend! =]

So the car was sooooooorted, only to find out on the way back home, my clutch was slipping =[ possibly due to the water leaking onto my flywheel when it leaked out the side of the head! a job for another day i think, ive also noticed a bit of oil collecting at the underside of my gearbox, and due to it not stinking like fishy choca, im guesstimting the oil seal has gone on the side of the block, not to worry, shall get sorted when i change the clutch.

Was pretty happy with the car until 2 weeks later when she refused to idle properly, would kangaroo unless you gave it beans, was fine at higher revs but poor at low revs. The spark coming from the coil was blue but the spark from the leads was orange, 2 days later the tacho kept jumping from 4k to 2k and back up again, harked back to my hall sender dying on my last mk1 gti. So new hall sender then, checked out the dizzy to find out it actually has points and a condenser! must be another quaint difference of the series ones!

So new contact breaker points then, thankfully they are like 3 quid from GSF. WOOHOOO, fitted the new contact breakers and the car was back to normal again, i didnt have to touch the timing and to be honest set the points gap by eye, had to lean out the mixture as it was sitting at 2k instead of 1k after fitting the new points, timing is still spot on at TDC.

So with the car working again it was off to All types when i managed to pick up a red stripe and chrome stripe grill and some magnecor 8mm leads.

Thankfully the 8mm leads came in useful as we lost power on the way back from all types, stuck the magnecor king lead on and all was sorted again! phew!

So come this weekend just gone and i decided to head down to Derby to help the homebrew crew paint a hijet for the mongol rally, i also had to fit a new outer CV boot as my existing one split a couple of weeks ago, noticed it when i fitted the new wheels, however another saga was encountered haha!

Travelling home from the unit at 3am friday evening and the car started pulling to the right, char asked if i felt like a side wind, i was like yuuup,  and automatically thought it was a wheel bearing cos there was no side wind =/ after turning the music off the car pulled again and a loud dakka dakka sound was heard, so pulled over and found the rear wheel able to be moved about an inch in and out the arch, sick instant camber!

so towed back to the unit, ready for attacking the next day. Yeti picked me up some new wheel bearings and I had a crash course in fitting them, basically never done them before, whipped everything off, got it all cleaned up and new bits greased up only to find i hadnt removed the outer races from the drum before fitting the new ones! gio showed me how to sort it and i was back on form again, 2 new wheel bearings fitted and all was good again.

Decided that i couldnt be arsed doing the CV boot after that saga as it was long and it was ridiculously hot, so much so i ended up doing some nude mechanics =/ so decided to fit my new autocavan solid rear gearbox mount, only to find that the actually existing rubber mount was missing the two nuts that hold it onto the chassis leg!!!

Read last night on fastgolf.co.uk that its been noted on a few other mk1 golfs so maybe they are like that from factory. how terribly bizzare. Anyway the gearchange is perfect now as its mated to my missing linkz short shift kit, just a shame my clutch is slipping so i cant give it full throttle beans grr! I have noticed a ridiculous amount of vibration however, i think having a perfect mount at the rear has made the fact the other engine mounts are 30 years old much more prevalent! So thats another job on the list haha!

It was about 6 o clock now and there was still a ridiculous amount of light and since we were milling about while karlamon was painting and we werent leaving for a bit i decided to attack the cv boot, which was a breeze after doing some in the past. I found it was far easier to remove the inner cv and replace the outer cv boot that way rather than boshing off the outer cv as damaging it would have left me immobile!

So that where i stand at the minute, ive seen a brand new cylinder head for the 1.6 for sale, ready to stick straight on, so Im mighty tempted as ive been looking for a spare head to get rebuilt and ported/polished, id be happy sticking this on for the time being (getting rid of my fubarring annoying tappet noise) and having my existing head fettled with.

However, plans are to try and devote as much time to the lupolo now, ive managed to get some R1 ITB's and inlet manifold for the lupo gti engine so hopefully itll give me the kick up the arse to get the rest of the outstanding jobs done, i would write a to do list but id end up crying haha!

the rebuilt block i have in the pictures is shown on here

an ETKA shot of the earliest golf engines (those lucky enough to have swallow tails, its an FP engine code from a 1975-1976 golf)

The compression ratio of the FP (1588cc Golf LS [carbed] block) vs the compression ratio of 9.5:1 of the EG (1588cc GTI block)

However just today, after painting up the FP block, i found a source that read that the EG (GTI) block used bowl-in-piston combustion chambers of a 'Heron' design (dish-headed piston crowns).

FP Carbed block  - brand new pistons

EG GTI block (a previous engine of mine, but the one i have removed from my 138k golf is in a similar state)

you can just see the raised lip and indented centre of the piston on the GTI block!

So now that I know that information, despite the bore stroke being the same at 79.5mm bore x 80mm stroke, putting the new pistons into my current GTI block wouldnt prove fruitful in trying to maintain the golfs original 9.5:1 ratio.

So my question to you all is, what is the real-world implications of a lower compression ratio? would it make much if any noticable difference?

as if its really that bad, then i will work out have to try and work out how much piston to valve clearance there is and if there is ample amounts, work out how much i can safely skim of the block to try and raise the compression ratio nearer to the factory for the injection setup

also painted the gearbox, warm up valve, and various pulleys

so far done a first coat in POR-15 Black Velvet, box cleaned with elbow grease, gunk natural and several hand and drill wire brushes, block had been painted when it was rebuilt in blue, but they had foolishly painted the gasket faces too, silly buggers! so they will get emeryed when the time comes, crankshaft oil seals will be replaced when it goes back together along with a 20mm larger 210mm clutch and a lightened/balanced flywheel.

i have two rebuilt heads, one for the EG (GTI setup so has injector holes) and the FP one, but as its carb'd it has no injector holes, perfect for running on carbs, but after my track record with the last series 1 carbs, non crossflow engines and fire, i think that lower compression and injection seems like a very viable option (and is in keeping with the heritage of the car, depsite having a frankenstien engine)
