HGT's 34th birthday yesterday. Built on 17.1.79. Couldn't resist a couple of pics in in the park.

Does anyone know what the two small holes in the drivers side rear mudflap might have been for - always wondered why they were there ?  VW logo maybe - but weren't they printed on ?

To me, they look like Mk2 mudflaps Dave. The Mk2 versions had 'Golf' or 'Cabriolet' badges fastened to them.
Mine looked like this from CQ's a few years ago….

These are the rears but the fronts are the same style too.

Nice pics. Happy birthday. I'm guessing these were taken before the snow hit or have you escaped it?

Thanks for the mudflap advice chaps. A surprise to find out they are mk2 flaps, thought they'd been on the car from new.  pt'd you Rajan.  The pics were taken just before the snow arrived Smudger. Going to try and get some snow mk1 pics tomorrow.

This is awesome, stunning attention to detail…. I'm currently restoring my 77 mk1 polo and have been torn between whether i should modify it or not, reading this thread has made me realize i shouldn't and should instead spend the extra money and time perfecting it to its original condition!

With a few shows coming up, I decided to it was time to attend to a few jobs on HGT.  After a few starting issues lately, we traced the problem to be the fuel pump. So a new pump was fitted, which seems to have cured the problem.   One job I did want to do was repaint the rear door-shuts which let the car down, and a couple of small bits under the rear bumper. One thing seems to lead to another, so while the bumpers were off, I decided to repaint them - a good chance to clean and polish the paintwork behind the bumpers.  I left the bumpers to dry in the safety of the garage – a few years ago when I did this, I laid them on the lawn to dry, and my wife not realising they were wet, hosed them while watering the lawn – not happy. Also the inner arches that I painted a couple of years ago were beginning to look a bit dirty, so these have been thoroughly cleaned and repainted. Hoping to have it all back together and finished for Dubs at The Park.

Cleaned up the engine bay

A shame it doesn’t say 1974 – 1993.
