Shellby - 83 gti ABF on carbs

No further advance with the shell, but finally put one problem to bed, wheels!!!

wanted some split rims, the obvious would be bbs rs, but I can't justify the price for a daily car, so first attempt at ending my wheel stress was a set of one piece bbs alloys

these sat by the shell for a while, but wanted split rims, so sold them!

after a trip to the vw festival at Leeds for some inspiration, saw a few mk1s looking good on Porsche alloys, so purchased a set of D90s

these sat by the shell for a while, but wanted split rims, so sold them!

Then by chance whilst looking on wheelwhores I found these

linea 16" 2 piece split alloys
16 x 7 on the front
16 x 8 on the rear

These will look so good on my car and fairly original, well chuffed!
let me know what you think.

Hi Smudger, cheers! No adaptors yet, but doubt ill need wheels for some time yet. There's a machine shop in the place my cars at, will eventually ask them to knock me some up.

Nice one mate. I think the adaptors are pretty expensive to buy off the shelf.

Edit: - Something like THIS ???

Yeah, seems extortionate for a bit of turned steel and some bolts! Will get a price from the machine shop and let people know what they should really cost, maybe save some people some money!

Good idea mate. Seems a mod most MK1 owners do at some point during their MK1 ownership.

Managed to sneak out and spend a few hours on the car, so spent them tinkering with the wings. Didn't achieve much, but wings were about an inch out, now a couple of millimetres! Onwards and upwards!

Finally got something to show. Been working on the rear wheel tubs which were a mess.

First I ground the penetration from welding in the arches then welded the seams

Then ground the welds flush.

Then some primer to protect.

Just needs a skim with some filler in places and it will look good again.

The colour, like most things on this build, has caused me stress! I was thinking of an orange/yellow seen on modern minis, but wasn't convinced it would look good on an old golf. Then saw mario klabig's green mk1 in the One Edition Performance vw, stated as Peugeot Acacia Green, looked beautiful. But after much hunting, I failed to find a paint code. I'm also red and green colourblind, so was worried it would look good to me, but an abomination to everyone else! After much deliberation I'm going for Miami Blue, seen a few in this colour, plus the missus likes it, so must be a winner!

If the missus likes it then it's always helpful.

Cheers E, always best to keep the mrs on side!

Can't wait to bolt the wheels on (in about 8 years time), they're gonna look fantastic!

Miami blue is indeed a great colour for a MK1. Helps the Mrs is onboard with it too :)

Today is a good day for my Shellby. First the postman brought these:-

avo coilover goodness!

Then got a text from the chap painting her stating he would be starting Tuesday. Finally after almost two years of welding, grinding, filling and sanding she is going to start looking like a complete car. Very excited!!
